I will be travelling on NW DTW-LGA and then on Air India from JFK-India.
I have a bose acoustimass module (http://www.bose.com/home_audio/ht_speakers/am15/) see the big black unit.
I WANT to carry this on with me as check in baggage as opposed to check it in. Do you think it will cause problems in security.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, will it fit in the overhead bin and/or under the seat. I am travelling economy.
I know the airlines will just tell me what is allowed, but we all know that people carry more/larger than they are 'allowed'.

According to their website ( http://www.airindia.com ) the cabin baggage allowances are:
"The dimension specifications for hand baggage are 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm. (22" x 16" x 8")."
