Will the falling $ cause you to modify vacation plans?

Earlier this year the Euro was about 15% less than the dollar. Thus, a 300 Euro hotel rate was about $255.00 a day. Now, of course, that rate is closer to $300.00
Is anyone considering altering vacation plans? Possibly, shortening their stay as a result of the falling dollar?

Though I'm certainly not pleased with the dollar's recent decline vis-a-vis the Euro, I do NOT plan to alter my upcoming long trip to Europe.

--I am no longer looking at Italian-made goods which I see in the U.S. and thinking about how much less those items will cost in Italy. Am paying more attention to end-of-season sales. Don't know if I'll modify my days in Europe, but certainly, know that I'll not be doing much shopping. The bargains are gone.

Still headed to Germany and Spain -- no change in our plans -- just a bummer it will cost more

Likewise, I was grousing about prepaying several of my rooms for August, but I wish I had done more now! At least I'll be getting double miles with AMEX...

yes - it will make my US-stays more attractiv again (but the US$ has still a lot to recline further, another 20%, to reach the low level it had versus my Swiss Franc 4 years ago ...).

I like this new trend very much

I agree with Rudi. This is great news, atleast for us FTers in Europe. This means that my US visit in august will be cheaper

It's not just the Euro. The dollar is falling against many other currencies. Another example is the New Zealand Dollar.

I was in NZ earlier this year and was amazed the favorable exchange rate. We stayed and ate very cheaply and brought back some very nice wine at bargain prices.

We're going back next year and have booked a suite at the Hyatt in AKL for the America's Cup. When I made the reservation, the cost was a bargain at $149US. The cost has since climbed to $176US and I am still seven months away from my trip. If this keeps up, I may downgrade my room.

I think that a lot of the currency fluctuation is tied to all the Wall Street debacles. Hopefully, this will turn around at some point in the future.

I seem to be the only one altering slightly as I had decided to treat us to LeSirenuse in Positano for 5 nights which would have cost approx. $2,500 for the stay, now downgrading to only 3 nights yet still costing about $2,000 fo the stay.

" Concerns about the U.S. economy caused the dollar to weaken further. It traded above parity with the euro for the first time in two years, and fell below 115.80 for the first time since late last September. The euro has jumped from about 87 cents in April. "

Perhaps I should have mentioned that part of my upcoming trip to Europe was prepaid --partly using points and miles and partly paying fixed dollar prices.

But I'll still be hit by the dollar's decline, no doubt about it!

No - I always calculated 1 Euro = 1 Dollar.
Be aware, you will find higher Euro prices; many businesses in Europe used the transformation to Euro for a price increase.
In Germany it's called Teuro (teuer + euro = expensive Euro)

Having just returned from a two-week trip to Paris, I too found that France, or at least Paris, is no longer the bargain that it once was, due to the rise in value in the Euro. Although my flight and hotel were paid with points, every day shopping and dining were considerably more expensive than in previous visits in the past 2-3 years.

Meals were considerably more expensive everywhere, with oddly enough, soft drinks costing between 3-5 Euros each, depending on where one was purchasing the drink. This translated to almost the equivalent in US dollars. Overall, it was a great trip and I will continue to make my annual pilgrimage to this great city, however, I may reduce the amount of shopping I do on future visits.
