Flying Standby on an UA flight that is AC codeshare?

I have a flight from SFO to YYZ on Mar 23. I originally connect in ORD on flight 154 then go to YYZ on 1015 (which is AC). However, i was thinking that if I got on United Airlines 3216 (Operated by Air Canada) then it'd be much faster. I know they let you standby on any earlier flight on the same day as long as the dest. is the same. However, do they let you standby even though it's really an AC flight? Do I have to deal with the AC people or is it United? Also, can I check bags or is standby meaning carryons only? Finally it's a priceline ticket so the lowest of the lows but hey it was only $200 return. Thanks.
