Tunnels between terminals to close at LAX

In this day and age, it's not the big deal it once was, since the terminals are pretty much assigned to one airline, and there's very little interlining.
But it appears to be another case of the traveller being inconvenienced yet again. Why is it that a pilot has to do a walk-around before each flight, but apparently the government employee at the metal detector has no responsibility TO SEE IF THE DARN THING IS PLUGGED IN?
Sheesh..... ? Yeah, I feel safer now....
Doea it make anyone else wonder how OFTEN this happened before 9/11?
