MAXIMUM CARRY ON ALLOWED?
What is the MAXIMUM carry on bag that can currently pass through the baggage sizer templates at the security zones?
I just bought a pilot case roll on measuring 24" x 8" x 15.5" am am fearful it is going to be too big. Will this fit? I would opt to use another bag if this is going to end up having to be checked.
Any feedback would be most appreciated.

Regarding the size of this carry on, you might get problems. US airlines are not (yet) very strict. LH is very strict. And when you pass FRA the airport people may trouble you.
I have a similar bag:
-LH did not let me take it as carry on.
-Delta did, however, the plane was so full, no place for the bag. Delta was prepared: a service man checked it in at the front door of the plane.
-Some overhead boxes (like on some 747-200) are to small for such bags.

In my experience, many templates in the US, such as UA's, are hinged, so if your bag doesn't fit (mine is 'a bit' oversized), just lift the template and let it sail through. Thus far, the screeners have not objected, nor has my bag been gate checked. However, as pointed out above, overseas operations can be quite strict. For example, if you are boarding TG in many cities outside of BKK, good luck with your rollaboard, even if it is a standard size (unless you are a top-level ROP member).

on ba - from london (both lhr & lgw i think), i've had to gate check my carry on because of weight. there was a scale at the gate. i think that the limit was 6 kilos, while mine was 11. this was going on after a flight from the us. haven't flown ba across the pond.

14 x 9 x 22 is generally considered the standard size that will get you through all of the airlines. Some allow larger bags. Remember, the size is the outside dimensions, including any wheels or handles that are sticking out. Some carryons were relabled when the airlines started getting strict and give you inside dimensions, because they are too big if using outside dimensions.
