Hotels in Rome
Two of us will be in Rome Dec. 21 - 25 (ust can't resist those DL specials
).
Looking for a decent, moderately-priced hotel reasonably close to all the main tourist attractions, such as Colliseo, Forum, Piazza Venezia, Spanish steps, etc.
Any and all ideas are appreciated.
P.S. Is under $100/night price reasonable? How is Rome around Xmass? Busy or empty?

A few years ago, in late November, I stayed at the Hotel Aberdeen that I had found in the Rick Steves guide. I was very pleased with my accommodations and the service from the friendly and efficient staff. The location is close enough to the major attractions and is also well served by public transportation. I believe you can stay there for around US$100/night; perhaps just a bit more.

Another hotel, just a couple of doors from the Abderdeen, is Hotel Oceania. While I have not stayed there, I was offered a tour of the property by the charming owner/manager, Stefano Loreti, who graciously received my unannounced visit and with whom I have kept in touch via email. Their website is very basic but there is a link to send email and check availability/rates. If you write to Stefano Loreti, please tell him that Bill Beal sends his regards.

On my last visit to Rome, I stayed at an all-suite hotel in the Trastevere neighborhood, a bit off the beaten path yet very convenient because it is on the tram line that serves the historical center. I loved staying in Trastevere, a beautiful, tree-lined area that was charming and peaceful with numerous cafes, restaurants and shops. I'll mention that the Ripa All Suites hotel will be the most expensive of the three I am recommending but they sometimes offer very attractive package prices.

Good luck with your search and have a wonderful Christmas in Rome!
