A Poll Please...

How will this tragedy in the U.S. affect your near future travel plans - both personal and business-related?

HHonors Sep 13, 2001 11:27 pm

I do not have any intention on altering any of my travel plans.

Marysunshine Sep 14, 2001 6:35 am

I will travel as planned and not let terrorism win out.

wigstheone Sep 14, 2001 7:31 am

I will continue to travel for business and leisure. One difference, however, is that I expect to use trains much more between NYC and Boston and DC, as the time advantages of flying are likely to be greatly diminished.

kathnunley Sep 14, 2001 8:57 am

I will continue to fly, alone and with my family and be comfortable with it. Life goes on.
My view on flying though is now equal to my view of being in a tall building in NYC.

aqueouschief Sep 14, 2001 9:28 am

I won't let whoever is responsible for this dictate how I, as an American, travel within my own country.

I love to fly, and will continue to do so.

nw_with_attitude Sep 15, 2001 2:11 pm

I am in the system again next week, and will continue to fly. However, I have long taken precautions, and urge others to do the same.

It is also my hope that rather than this rag tag grab bag of fast security measures, an end to end system is devised and implemented.

FemaleFlyer Sep 15, 2001 6:40 pm

I agree with wigstheone. I will generally continue to fly as much as I have in the past (although I can see myself missing many more flights since I'm generally running for the gate with my e-ticket and carryons). However, I will probably drive more to destinations like Austin and Dallas simply because it will take the same amount of time once you factor in the ticket counter and extra security. I would rather be driving and listening to a book on tape than waiting in line at an airport.

As I have no current travel plans, I'm gonna let the dust settle (no insensitive pun intended) for at least a few weeks. My only real apprehension is getting stuck overseas while the US starts an attack. Its not going to necessarily keep me home, but if I think things are imminent, I may not leave the country.

KathyWdrf Sep 15, 2001 11:06 pm

Two days before the attack, I made travel arrangements to go to NYC in early October for a long weekend to see a film at the New York Film Festival and partake of other cultural offerings there.

At the same time, I made plans to go to Singapore in late November for a combined vacation/mileage run.

I still plan to go on both trips, unless developments in the weeks before my trips convince me otherwise. In other words, my attitude is "wait and see."

isleroyal Sep 16, 2001 8:45 am

I will not alter my current plans. Let's see if the airlines do (with fewer flights) Our family is leaving for Mexico in Oct. On Thurs. I purchased E tickets for Florida in November. We are hoping to go to Eurpoe for Easter.

RAD Sep 16, 2001 12:07 pm

Never did like E-tickets -- paper is so much better, especially when last-minute changes happen (often, for me) and a ticket needs to be endorsed over to another airline. Plus, it's harder to forge a ticket than a printed itinerary.

Flying again? I'm sitting in the Air Canada lounge in Toronto right now, trying to get home to Denver. I have trip coming up to Hong Kong, and probably another couple of trips before the year is out. It's cool.

Last night, my wife told me that if I had to, "be sure to kick some hijacker ...!"

kathnunley has a great point:
  • Flying is no more dangerous than it used to be.
  • Being in a skyscraper is more dangerous than it used to be.

Goldlust Sep 16, 2001 1:59 pm

I will continue as usual. There are still countries that I will not visit but that "blacklist" is the same for me as before the attack.

0524 Sep 16, 2001 2:36 pm

I'll drive shorthaul, but continue to fly longhaul, both for business and pleasure.

SFOPIT Sep 16, 2001 2:54 pm

No changes in my plans, other than having to reschedule some flights. I hope everyone takes the time to be more aware when they fly and care for everyone that much more.

BBRebozo Sep 16, 2001 6:55 pm

If we stop flying, the terrorists win.

I personally am going to ADD a trip to New York to my agenda, as soon as the city can accommodate tourists again. Just to see a show, go to dinner, pump some money into the NYC economy, and do my tiny part to get things moving again.

robb Sep 16, 2001 11:16 pm

Having gotten more involved with th eflyertalk community during this tragedy, I will porbably fly a littl emore as I join an FT gathering or two.

My work and personal travel will not change.

Analise Sep 17, 2001 9:35 am

I will fly as per usual.

El Cochinito Sep 17, 2001 1:04 pm

No changes here. Still plan to go to Denver, Miami, Detroit, and Washington DC over the next five weeks. And have already booked our vacation next April in Singapore and Tokyo. All on UA.

rtpflyer Sep 17, 2001 4:14 pm

I cancelled one trip this weekend, but only because my wife's overlapping trip (to a different destination) was cancelled by the airline. So I decided it was best to stay home with her. I will probably travel as much, but probably with fewer short weekend trips and more longer vacations to maximize the time at the destination and reduce total transit time proportionately. I will also probably drive for shorter trips (like RDU-DCA / RDU-BWI) when I might have flown before if the airfare was cheap enough.

freefaller12k Sep 17, 2001 4:28 pm

I'll be looking for some bargin fares comming up, but no more short flights. I'll probally be driving what I would have flown before due to the adding inconvience (Destinations < 500 miles or so).

Redhead Sep 18, 2001 3:20 pm

BBRebozo - please come to NYC as soon as you can. NYC is bouncing back - we will not let the terrorists win. NYC is ready and able to accomodate tourists now - you just won't be able to visit the downtown area and probably not the Statue, but rest is here and waiting.

I have friends flying in from London next week who have never been to my fair city and I plan to show them that we are as great as ever.

Thanks for thinking of us.

As a newly arrived New Yorker I have to agree with the previous post. There are million things to do and so many interesting people to meet. It's just a matter of time that it will bounce back. The corner where I lives, (St. Marks & 3rd) is already filled with pedestrians.

KathyP Sep 19, 2001 1:01 am

I flew yesterday from Dulles to Newark and back again today so I guess I was really tempting fate by using two of the airports that were involved in the hijacking. I will not let the *******s stop me from doing my job. I also believe that when God decides it's your time then that's it and you can't prevent the time and manner of your death by hiding in a closet.

PigsFly81 Sep 19, 2001 2:35 pm

It won't alter my plans. Going home to see the rents out of BWI like always and off to Europe in the spring.

pjs Sep 19, 2001 5:38 pm

I will continue to make the weekly DL run to ATL. We have cancelled a trip to NYC next weekend. I really didn't like the idea of my asthmatic pregnant wife and daughter walking around with all the dust and smoke in the air. We hope to reschedule after the baby's born in January.

flowerchild Sep 19, 2001 10:38 pm

It's of fear of flying that will keep me at home - it's the "no tweezers" mentality security.

MilesManiac Sep 20, 2001 9:39 am

I will continue to fly as usual, but did have to cancel a trip to Italy for Sunday only because the group traveling cancelled.
My other trips are a GO for me, including International!

lyss710 Sep 20, 2001 10:13 am

Not much traveling for me right now, mainly because I didn't have any scheduled before the hijackings. However, if airlines reinstate some decent sale fares, I may be off and flying again in 2002 (I've used up all vacation for 2001 already).

No company travel, at least for now - we have a company directive to only travel by air when ABSOLUTELY necessary, and even then there are a lot of restrictions as to where we can go (obviously no Afghanistan, Sudan, Libya, etc., but also no South Africa, Kenya, Morocco and some others that don't make a lot of sense to me).

aqueouschief Sep 20, 2001 12:00 pm

I agree with many of you that we need to keep flying with confidence and not let paranoia rule the day.

I for one would like to see the airlines reinstate webfares ASAP and other sales to being to attract customers quickly. i will take advantage of them.

I think that this can be done, especially when Bush reaffirms his support for the industry in his speech tonight. I fiormly believe that the airlines will be helped back on their feet (notice I did not say bailed out).

Let's get out there! Off to web portals as we speak...

Zeeta Sep 20, 2001 2:19 pm

I don't plan to change my travel plans. This is what I do for a living or how I get to what I do, so it is my livelihood. I would be interested in how to safeguard myself better. Any suggestions?

Riptide Sep 20, 2001 3:43 pm

I'm an auto broker so I have to fly all the time and will continue to do so. I will be keeping a closer eye on things though.

mommaroo Sep 20, 2001 9:42 pm

Flying from DFW to LGA Oct.4th---Now is probably the securist time to fly..

lulu3502001 Sep 21, 2001 8:07 am

I'm flying cross country next weekend...there is no way I'm going to stop flying because of this!

willis Sep 21, 2001 8:13 am

We won't change our travel plans. We leave Sept 30th for St Martin and have just purchased tickets for our trip to Grand Cayman in April. We have reservations in place for St Croix for New Years 2002, its just a bit to early yet to get tickets for that trip as well as our Grand Canyon Trip in Sept, 2002. We travel strictly for pleasure for 2 to 3 weeks every year and refuse to change our plans, to do so lets the terrorists win, and that can't be allowed.

I can't wait to get back up in the air.
My next trip is mid October. I only wish this trip was sooner.

And I'm still going to the PIP in Provence. Check out the thread in the Community area.

All my personal travel, both domestic and international, remain unchanged. Unfortunately, my employer has instated very strict travel rules and most of my trips have been cancelled or postponed against my wishes.

I wish I were 1,000 miles away

BoSoxFan45 Sep 21, 2001 2:23 pm

I think I will not alter my domestic travel plans.

But I will ALWAYS get paper tickets now, and I may avoid flying overseas for the time being.

Finally, I guess there's no more business meetings at Airline Lounges. Could be a major inconveniece.

Droneklax Sep 21, 2001 3:24 pm

I think we have an ABSOLUTE DUTY to fly right now.

The airlines, those whose livelihood depend on air travel, and the economy in general, need our help.

Go fly!!!!!

Gui Sep 21, 2001 3:56 pm

If one felt safe to fly before, it seems to me, that it is even safer now..As for me, I have no qualms at all about flying and I fly a lot. Have 3 more International flights this year and another half dozen or so domestic flights. First, I enjoy the flying, second I am not going to let these people dicate what and where I go....So as for me..it is up up and away..
