The only two occasions where I've redeemed mileage have been as follows:

(1) To upgrade CHAcltLAXcltCHA on US (having been only a "DM4" at the time).
(2) For a trip to this past year's Scott Tournament of Hearts, ATLyyzYSByyzATL (Aéroplan miles can't be used for upgrades, and when looking at a US$500 fare v. 15,000 miles, it's kind of a no-brainer...)

Normally First Class international tickets. It costs me between 120,000-150,000 miles each ticket but I think it is worth it when the ticket can cost anywhere from $5000-10,000. I do buy First Class tickets but typically round the world so using the miles is worth the savings.

With AA we upgrade internationally because they allow you to do that. With BA we get Club Europe ticket which are usually prohibitive. I do not use them for free tickets as these are usually quite well priced.

I am new to this forum as well...your question certainly got a lot of replies. I fly international alot with UA...and my only suggestion would be to use miles with another airline if you fly across the seas. In particular, use Singapore Air for a trip to Singapore or, if you are a AA miler, use Cathay Pacific to HK (or Sing). There are no American 5 star airlines. When you fly Sing or Cathay business class, you'll understand the difference. Good luck

I'm new to FT as well, but I'm AA PLT Lifetime and use miles primarily for upgrades. If I'm on a short (3 or less hrs.) domestic flight I'll book Coach and use upgrade segments to move up to BC or FC (assuming I can get the upgrade), otherwise I'll tough it out in the back. For over Europe I'll purchase the lowest available coach and use miles to upgrade to BC. We're planning a China trip next year and will use miles for BC on CX to HK.

I used miles recently for a last minute LGA-ORD same day RT that would have cost $1,000+.

Oh yeah, my wife and I went to her kid's graduation on the West Coast last year; found out her ex-husband was on the same flight - immediately UG'd to FC. We both enjoyed waving to him as he went to the back!
