Getting around married segment inventory controls: My experience
Summary:
* You can go to Manila from Detroit, stopping only in Japan in 3 ways: through Osaka, Nagoya, or Tokyo.
* Given the fact that most of the beyond Japan service (to SE Asia) continues from Tokyo, NW decided to prevent Manila-bound pax from flying to Manila from Detroit through Tokyo, and letting those pax go through NGO and KIX
* Thus, space is cleared for other pax who want to travel to NRT and other cities that can only be reached from NRT.
* DTW-NRT-MNL (married segments) shows up as having no seats available
* DTW-NRT has seats available
* NRT-MNL shows up as having no seats available
* Any other U.S. gateway-NRT-MNL shows up as having seats available.
---------------------------------------------
I wanted to fly DTW-NRT-MNL because I know someone travelling on DTW-NRT and continuing elsewhere. (I was originally confirmed on DTW-KIX-MNL)
A week ago, I requested to be put on DTW-NRT-MNL. The agent told me that she couldn't because there were no seats for NRT-MNL or DTW-NRT-MNL.
---------------------------------------------
To beat the system:
* Requested to do DTW-SEA-NRT-MNL. Agent booked DTW-SEA and then SEA-NRT-MNL (married segments)
* A few hours later, I called back, and requested to just change DTW-SEA-NRT to DTW-NRT. The agent added the segment DTW-NRT to the itinerary. Then, she attempted to delete SEA-NRT. However since SEA-NRT-MNL was married, she couldn't get rid of just SEA-NRT. So, she got a supervisor to override the system and got rid of DTW-SEA-NRT.
* Wallah! I got DTW-NRT-MNL.
