Bangkok has an amazing range of accomodations, beginning at less than $5/night. Here is a list of Bangkok Budget Hotels that is right in your range. Here is another list of hotels.
One site that you might find interesting is Khao San Road. Khao San is very popular with budget travelers... a real backpackers' paradise. A lot of tourist shops, street hawkers, travel agents, cafe/restaurants, and various inns. Did I mention street hawkers? Anyway, you'd be hard pressed to find rooms there for much over $10/night.
