Italy @ Easter?

After going down to Genoa last weekend to catch a Ryanair flight to Stansted, I've got a real urge to go down to Italy this coming long weekend (Fri-Mon off!).

I'm sure that in a country like Italy there are all sorts of interesting traditions associated with Easter and the sorrounding days, but I haven't had much luck looking at varoius web sites (other than finding out that a cart full of fireworks is exploded in Florence on Easter Sunday).

Anyone know of any other towns that put on something really memorable for Easter? I'd prefer northern Italy but for something really cool, I'm willing to trek to the south.

I would like to imagine that in Perugia, the famous hilltop city where all your Perugina Baci chocolates come from, Easter would be a fun time. Not too far south, between Florence and Rome.

Rome is probably more south than you want but...
I was in Rome during Holy Week about 10 years and there was a lot of activiy. But it was also VERY crowded with tourists. The Pope performs the Stations of the Cross beginning at the Coliseum and it is possible to get quite close (I was about 10 feet away), there is an Easter address at the Vatican and various other services/events around the city.

Wherever you go, have a great time and tell us about in a trip report.

If you plan to drive bear in mind all schools just kicked off their easter break - this means bad traffic & crowded trains. It was'nt bad last weekend until tuesday especially around the La Spezia to Brecia area. However going to Milan is also pretty heavy, about 1-2 hrs delay at times. Most small towns have easter celebrations, I just saw on TV today, Sienna had some good set up complete with costumes. Im sure there are other places as well.
