Upgrade coupon booklets?

A friend told about coupon booklets you can buy from airlines that contain coupons which allow you to upgrade from coach to first class. I've never seen or heard of such a thing. Can anyone tell me about this, which airlines offer them, costs, etc.?

I'm especially interested in American Airlines and Delta.

Thanks!

MikeB,

Yes, most major U.S. airlines offer upgrade coupons for purchase. Restriction for using it may differ from airline to airline though so be sure to study it.

For American, the link to its website is: http://www.aa.com , scroll down to the bottom and find the AAdvantge list selection. Select the AAdvantage Member Guide, and then choose the Electronic Upgrades section. In this section there is a topic for Purchased Upgrade, which is what you're looking for. (sorry, I wish I knew how to send you the direct link but American's website is a little screwy)

For Delta, I believe the upgrade "coupons" (it's actually electronic now) are only for Medallion members (i.e. members flying 25,000 miles/30 segments or more annually); which means if you're just a plain Skymiles member you may not be able to purchase upgrade coupons. But of course you can always use miles to upgrade, when purchasing select Economy fares.

Hope this helps a bit.
Thx
Jamester
