I have a friend who goes to Italy for 2 or 3 weeks every year, speaks Italian, and studied there in college (I htink he was in Florence) and is a real Italophile. I recently asked him what his favorite place in Italy was, and my jaw dropped when he said Milan. I can't remember his exact reasons, but it had a lot to do with the everyday civic and especially commercial life there. He describes the shops as beautiful, and says that you will find things there that you won't find almost anyplace else in the world.
I didn't have the same experience of Milan, but he's spent a lot more time there than I and I thought that given the trend of this thread, it might be interesting to have a minority opinion.

Milan is 'the wealthiest' city in Italy. The North of Italy is the strongest commercial region. Prices reflect that economic strength.
But sightseeing Milan (2-3 days) is REALLY worth it, added by an excellent (but still also costly) gastronomie and to top it: an (italian) Opera evening at theSCALA is a must, you might discover the next Caruso!

Regarding Rudi's comment on "wealthiest" city -- in Milan in January I was absolutely stunned at the number of full length mink coats!! Guess the PETA people haven't gotten there yet

La Scala is certainly a big deal, but have you ever tried scoring a ticket to the place? Sold out (for opera) until 2273, so you'd better have a good concierge.
Incidentally, I understand that the Coin (pronounced ko-EEN) department store chain is named for its founder, Signor Coin -- 'Coin' is the Italian version of 'Cohen.'

Milanese wearing their furs. It was at least 70 degrees F in the shade! The Italians seem to be colder than the average bear. You can always spot the American in Rome who is walking around in shirtsleeves in 60 degree weather, while the Romans are in full wool coat and gloves.

BTW, I haven't spent any time in Milan, but was impressed at the duty free in the airport. Bulgari, Ferragamo? Boy, thats where I would spend my last lire!
