Briggs & Riley Question
I'm looking for a new bag for a trip to Bali. Have looked through old threads and found many favorable comments about Briggs & Riley luggage. Then I look some more and find several posts about them going out of business (about August of 2000). Their website is up and running with some great testimonials, including a superb story of a guy delivering his bag to a remote Alaskan lodge by just shoving it out of the low-and-slow-flying plane (because he didn't want to drag it through the forest from the airfield a mile away). I howled... Anyway, does anyone have CURRENT info on this company: are they still in business and is their lifetime warranty for real? Thanks in advance for your comments.

Dianne47,
Actually, Briggs & Riley didnt go out of business per say, they were bought by another firm, US Luggage. US Luggage does not manufacture the luggage, they are simply the corporate owners of Briggs & Riley.
There is a travel shop in San Francisco who carries the brand and will ship to states outside of California. The name of the shop is "The Complete Traveler" and they can be reached at 415/923-1511. They are located at 3207 Filmore Street in Cowhollow, for those who live in the city.

Whatever you buy from them will be the most durable luggage you've ever owned. I've got a B&R big fold-over that has probably 150K miles on it in past 3 years.
It still looks new and the only sign of any wear is on the wheels.

squeakr, do you mean Franklin T. Figg Travelware on Main Street in Half Moon Bay?
We have two pieces of B&R luggage and it really is fantastic. Haven't put as many miles on ours as Shadow. My favorite is the roll aboard, which expands another 3 inches.
It's expensive, but worth it.

The lifetime warranty is(was?) indeed real. I do over 200,000 miles a year and a lot of travel in China. I don't even want to contemplate what my bags are subjected to. Though Briggs and Riley luggage is extrememly durable, nothing is indestructible. Over time, the zippers, corners and handles take a beating. I've sent my 29"er back twice for repairs over the last 3 years and the same bag is returned looking like new. Amazing. You pay the shipping back to Briggs and they pay for the same shipping home. For example if you fork out for FEDEX overnight, they fork out for FEDEX overnight. I can't recall what their in-shop repair time is. I forget if its 24-hour turn around or 72-hour max. I really hope the new company continues the lifetime warranty policy. But even if they didn't, I feel I've already gotten my money's worth.

You don't have to go to CA to buy them, your local luggage store should have them. If not, there's always www.ebags.com.
B&R is great! Quality is superb I have the 21" Vertical Carry-On (U-21). It fits well with UA carry-on templates. Never had a problem. It's been through 104 segments and 100K last year and still looking great. If you are looking for a carry-on, you might want to spend the extra money for the 21" Expandable Vertical with Garment Carrier (U-21X) instead.

Ditto on what Seawolf said. I have the expandable 21" with at least 150K on it. I just bought the Deluxe Tote to go with it. I had a good look at the whole line of Tumi before making the call and although Tumi makes a fine product I like the B&R for myself.

Thank you all for your comments regarding Briggs & Riley. I'm still thinking... I already have sets of Samsonite, Hartmann, and TravelPro. My husband thinks I'm nuts! But I hardly ever met a tote or a really cool rollaboard I didn't like...
