LAS hotel "finds"
Hi, a friend and I are planning a trip to Vegas for the Big Dance (Super Bowl), and, of course, rooms are quite pricey. We'd obviously like to stay somewhere nice but without spending a ridiculous amount of money.
At $550 a night, Caesar's is out of the question. Places like the Luxor and Monte Carlo and New York New York are averaging about $175 a night. These are quality hotels, IMO, and not out of our price range, but we'd like to do better in terms of cost, if we can.
Keep in mind, price is not the only factor. We don't necessarily want something superplush, but something nice. The Excalibur is pricing out OK, but I don't care for it too much (small rooms, semi-grimy).
Anyway, does anyone have recommendations for any of the smaller or lesser-known hotels (Imperial Palace) or old-school ones (Sahara, Riviera)? Wouldn't mind going off the beaten path, so to speak, but we definitely want to be on the Strip.
Also complicating the problem is that we'll be arriving on the day before (many are saying no Sat. arrivals). I will, naturally, keep checking after making a reservation, as we get closer to the date, but we want to act soon to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the sites, flyguy.
As for the Hampton Inn, I don't know what it's like. $80 is a good price, but I don't know what it buys.
I guess what I really want are opinions of people who've stayed at some of the "other" hotels, such as Tropicana, Riviera, New Frontier, San Remo, etc.

I should be in LAS in a couple of weeks, staying at the Main Street Hotel. From all reports, it is good value for money ($40 Thu, $60 on weekends) and recently renovated. I can update you on my return.

Instead of asking for a "per night rate" see if you can get a 3 or four night "package rate". Try the Flamingo, or Ballys, older hotels, but usually comfortable rooms with good casinos. If you are a player, see if the casino marketing dept. can get you a better room rate at the hotel.

Last year, 4 of us (including Catman) went to LAS for Superbowl and had a great time. Rooms are alway price expensively now, wait a few months (like September-October) when the "expected" booking do not come in, the prices are lowered.
I will probably be going again this year and if I do, I can get a couple of extra rooms at a casino rate at the LV Hilton. The party there was great last year..

actually, yes. The frontier is not new, regardless of the name. It is the same property that had a strike against it for about 10 years. Used to be nice. Last time I was there it was a dump. I would stay several places before I stayed there. When are yopu going?

I need to agree with Cigarman in the New Frontier. I was there for 4 nights in December. The room was, as advertised, a suite, with large bedroom, and separate living room. This had a sofa and a table and 2 chairs, coffee table, TV and a "bar" with a refrigerator. The rest of the hotel is just plain, not super like most of the Las Vegas hotels are. If you are mainly interested in the room and the price is good, then it will fill the bill. If you want other hotel amenities, it would be best to look elsewhere.
