Out Of The Ordinary "Upgrade"

I was invited to visit the cockpit of a BA 777. They began the descent shortly after I got inside. I asked the captain if I could stay for the landing. He said it was the f/o's leg; the f/o said "yes". We landed on runway 9R at LHR. A very memorable experience.

Just curious if this was on AA?

and if it was AA, don't US regulations apply...No pax in the cockpit?

I flew in the cockpit on Air Canada last summer for landing into Montreal. What a thrill.

In his post, FlyAAway says it was a cockpit of a BA 777. I'm guessing that would be a British Airways 777 and not an AA one.

You are correct Jetroop, it was British Airways.

About 2 years ago, I was flying from Singapore to Cairns, Australia in Business (a 767-300 red-eye) and accepted a glass of champagne and made a comment that it was my birthday and wanted to celebrate in style. The F/A made a comment about promising me a beautiful sunrise. I was shocked when about 20 mins prior to landing, I was invited in the cockpit to witness the sunrise. I stayed for the landing. I went from extremely tired (after only sleeping 1 hour) to exhilarated.

It was a truely special birthday I will never forget!

At a flight attendant's request on a QF 747-400 flight LAX-SYD, I switched upstairs business class seats so a very frequent passenger could have his regular seat. My reward: a seat in the cockpit and a fascinating one-hour conversation with the pilot and first officer!

I was invited to "observe the landing from the cockpit" on a BA 777 in May, flying LHR-IAD. Even though it was drizzly weather out and low cloud cover, it was one of the most memorable flights of my life!

A couple of years ago, a co-worker was flying VS Upper from LHR to MIA. I don't remember all of the details, but apparently the FA's staged a little contest to see who would be invited to sit in the cockpit for the landing - he won, and he said it was one of the more memorable experiences he'd had (it was a 747-400 if i remember correctly).

BA seems to be gracious in this area. I've had the priviledge of landing in SFO, LHR, and NRT several times in the last year. All on 747-400's. I've also had the extremely good fortune to be up front during takeoff from LHR and NRT a few times. I've always asked the FA while settling in upstairs and provided some form of ID. It's worked a fair amount of the time, but it always comes down the the flight crew. I've enjoyed every opportunity!

British/UK pilots seem quite relaxed about having guests in the cockpit, especially once they get to know you. CX (again, if they know you) on occasion will let you have some real fun

In the light of the BA Nairobi flight deck fiasco our USA members perhaps feel that passengers should not be allowed on the flight deck
Personally I welcome the UK approach, and with VS have been on the deck for arrivals into IAD and SFO and departure from LHR,with the headphones on it is awesome

No, USA members of this board do not feel one way or another. Flight deck access in this country is an FAA decision.

In the mid 90's I traveled several times on South African Airways JFK-JBG and MIA-CPT. Several times I saw pax invited into the Cockpit for takeoffs and landings. I'm still waiting to experience this myself though.
