How much FA flirting is appropriate?
 

On my flight yesterday, one FA spent an entire flight flirting with one passenger. This FA noticed the passenger immediately upon boarding, stared at and then approached the passenger, using the pick-up line: "you look so much like this person I know". 30 minutes after take off, the FA took a plastic bag and started collecting garbage from the front down. I thought this was awful early in a 2-hour flight, but I soon realized what was going on: The FA stared some more at the passenger, stopped at the seat and proceeded to be, let's say, very friendly- not that there is anything wrong with being friendly. The FA kneeled in the aisle, blocking anyone's moves up and down. People had to walk up to the FA to return their trash. This lasted a good 30 minutes, during which the protagonists' faces came very very close to one another.

After which the passenger was invited to sit down on the crew seats in the back with the FA who did no additional service until landing when the passenger returned up front. They both shared the crew seat until landing.

I thought it was inappropriate to show so much regard for one passenger and none for the others. After all, this is a job. Comments?

PS: I left gender conspicuously out of the equation.

Flirting to the extent that it effects only the two involved is fine. It is when as in this case it effects other pax, or in a worst case scenario effects the spouse or significant other that I have to draw the line. I like flirting, but I also like being treated to the service for which I have paid. Therefore, I typically will pick up a book or put my headphones back on when it has gone far enough. How far is that? Tough call. Guess I just do it on a case by case basis.

Not good. And unprofessional if they were neglecting other passengers or service.

Where were the other flight attendants? Can't imagine being one of only 3 flight attendants on any full airplane these days with this sort of behavior going on.....

I remember flying a 3-day trip with a young new-hire who had the hots for pilots - any pilots! She would spend an inordinate amount of time in the cockpit conversing, looking for her future husband. I had to lay down the law after trying to tactfully bring to her attention that she was neglecting her duties.

The overwhelming, vast majority of aircrews these days are well beyond the old stereotype of hooking up with passengers/pilots....

I just re-read your post - are you saying this passenger occupied a flight attendant jumpseat for any duration of the flight?

Big infraction if this is the case...

The only time I was in a jumpseat is when I was getting oxygen...I'll admit, I have been the "affection" of a few flight attendants, including recently 2 on the way to TPE, one who once wanted my address to send me a few things from her hometown that she thought I'd like, and so on. And I doubt any of this activity was really at the expense of other passengers. But earlier this year on a Shuttle flight, the flight attendant spent her entire flight, save the time it took her to throw us drinks, at seat 1C. I seem to recall that she didn't do anything else for the flight. We were looking at her in amazement. One hour, one passenger. At least she didn't hop on his lap.

I once heard 2 FA talk about another FA who gave nude messages during her time off. They said that she denied having sexual contact with the customers, whatever that means.

**** if I'd bring trash to the F/A, I'd just ring the the F/A call button.

And I think a letter to the airline would be in order.

If I was being ignored by the F/A as you describe, I'd probably go up to him/her and say something like "excuse me, I'm going to be writing the president of this airline a nice letter telling him how much I enjoyed being ignored by the F/A's on this fight, I'll need the spelling of your name."
