Why are plastic airplane models so expensive?

1/100 scale models going for $300?

1:144 going for $25?

They're injection-molded plastic, after all.

Excellent question- perhaps they are PRECISION injection-molded plastic!

A bit like asking why first class seats LAX-LHR cost $10,000, isn't it? The answer is because that is what people are willing to pay for them

BTW, I use www.airplanesuperstore.com

They are mostly 1:400 and 1:200 die cast metal printed with ink running in the $24-$60 range.

I know Austxhiker has a plane from there as his Flyertalk Survivor contest prize ...as does Shack over the matter of last year's NCAA Division 1-A Football Championship

I think I have seen good deals on eBay - worth a quick check.
