I am taking advantage of AA's cranking fares to Europe. I am ticketed to Zurich. This is strictly a mile-maker. 33K, give or take with assorted bonuses. At any rate, I am looking for a place to stay that is CHEAP, SAFE, & CLEAN, in that order.
So folks, what can you tell me? Looking forward to all replies.

CHEAPexcept a free room at Rudi's, there is no cheap overnight-place in costly Switzerland. Even Backpackers, Youth-hotels, etc, will charge you above SFr 100 ($65).
Out of town B&B is much cheaper than in town or around the airport..
SAFEany place in Switzerland is safe, may be except Rudi's (but even baobab survived there).
CLEANany place in Switzerland is clean, may be except Rudi's when Gisela is away.

I always think Zurich hotels are a bit on the expensive side, too. When I have a Halbtax (half fare) card, I usually go to a nearby town just for lodging. It'll reduce costs considerably, my favorite being Einsiedeln ... unless you hate a big church and monastery. It's a one-hour train ride from ZRH.

I did a milage run to ZRH two weeks ago and stayed at the Intercontinental. It was 155 Francs a night for a room on the business floor. It was OK for less that $100. US a night. Its about a 10 minute ride on the tram to The Hauptbahnhof and shopping area.

You can sometimes get a bargain at some of the expensive hotels. I once got a room at the Sofitel under the half-price hotel plan from Travellers's Advantage (same as Entertainment). Last month, I stayed at the Marriott for 256Sfr/night ($167) for 2 people, including breakfast. In two weeks, I will stay in nearby (and less popular) Baden for 195 Sfr /night at a Best Western.
I've stayed at these hotels in Zurich, all of which I can recommend. All are in the 200-300 Sfr range: Marriott, Sofitel, Central Zurich, Schwiezerhof (all by the main station), Movenpick & Rennissance (by the airport).
There is an Ibis hotel on Zurichstrasse that should be a lot cheaper. I haven't stayed at that one, but I have stayed at other Ibis hotels that seem OK. (Ibis is owned by the same people who own Motel 6).

SFr 185 (=US$ 105), includes taxes and tips (as everywhere in Switzerland) and is VERY reasonable for the Marriott in ZRH. That's the low-season weekend-rate. Enjoy /while we from Zurich will be in Dusseldorf ...

$105.-- in Zurich should be considered a steal for a Marriott. That is less then any in the U.S.
Of course, on a 'RUN' I opt for Austria and get 3 gourmet meals for that price at a spa hotel with healing waters.

I was shopping for Zuerich Hotels a while ago and found that Interconti had reasonable weekend specials. Remember: Switzerland is not cheap.
In the hell:
The British are cooking.
The Germans are responsible for fun/jokes.
The Italians for organisation/justice.
And the Swiss make the prices.
