What to do in Anchorage?

Hi Gang,

My partner and I will have one day in Anchorage on September 11th.

Any suggestions on things to do?

Should we get a car?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

William

Rent a car. Start out at dawn. Drive 150 miles south through breathtaking scenery to Seward for a boat excursion through the Kenai Fjords -- whales, dolphins, sea lions, bald eagles, glacier up close and personal, etc. On the return, stop at the Westin Prince Alyeska Resort in Girdwood about 40 miles south of Anchorage; take the ski lift to the Seven Glaciers restaurant for dinner at sunset. Make advance reservations for both the boat ride and dinner.

See www.GlenStephens.com/aslaka.htm
for a report I did on visiting Barrow from Anchorage. A day will also get you neatly over to the Kenai Peninsula from Anchorage to catch some King Salmon you can take home with you all filleted up! No car needed on that trip.

The day trip to Seward is also very nice I agree .. did that the trip before.

Give yourself a couple days and go to Fairbanks is the nicest trip.

Keep in mind that while Anchorage is still south of the Arctic circle, it's far enough north that daylight lasts significantly longer than one might expect. Since you have multiple drivers, it's quite feasible to drive a long distance away, spent many hours at the destination, and be back before it even gets dark. You can continue to enjoy the scenery all the way....
