--This is a somewhat modified version of a post I made in Flyertalk Community, in the “Hints for Newbies and the Cyber Challenged” thread. --

Even the most accomplished FFers amongst us might have trouble keeping up with all the airport codes that get bandied about on this board.

One option, when coming across an unknown abbreviation (like ULN for instance) is to pop open one of any number of websites and type in the code to determine what airport is being discussed.

But there’s an easier (IMHO) process to look up the codes. Using the airport codes listed at ual.com as a basis, I compiled all the codes together into a Text file, so that I have the all codes accessible at all times on my computer, instead of only when I’m online. (This is particularly useful while reading threads offline to catch up on FT backlog.)

In addition, having a file containing all the data in one place (Airport Code, City, Country, Airport Name) allows more sophisticated searches on any possible string contained in the data. For instance, UAL’s online search requires a full City Name or Airport Name; using the file on my computer allows partial name searches.

If anyone’s interested in a copy of the file in:

A UAL pilot once told my husband that OGG is named for Captain Oggsomething-or-other, a pilot who once badly missed the runway there. Don't know if this is true, but I've never heard a better explanation for why Kahului, Maui would be OGG.

OGG was named after Capt. Hogg. I have no other details except I think he was a WWII hero.
