Janet Flights?

Hi, all. I've been reading the messages for this board for some time now, and at last I have a question to post.

I'll be taking my second job out of college in about a month, and will be flying out of Las Vegas to my job site on a weekly basis. Only thing is, it is with a regional commuter airline that I'm not familiar with and I don't recall having seen it mentioned on this board. Does anyone have any experience with an airline called Janet?

Do they have a frequent flyer program or are they connected with a major airline?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Janet is the callsign for the gov't operated flts operated to "Area 51" and all of those "hidden places" that you see talked about on TV. No FFP obvisouly

Sorry to hear your employment was so short. NOBODY talks about Janet, except insiders. Didn't they tell you?

"Hi, I'm Janet...fly me!"

There are probably a few old-timers that remember...

Thanks burkey, flyguy and shadow. Actually, I do get a security briefing and all, but not until my start date.

For the record, my work site is not one of those strange places you're not supposed to talk about. It's in Tonopah, which has been declassified (If that is the right term) since they moved the stealth fighter base out of it in the eighties.

Janet was merely mentioned in passing, but I got to thinking about it and since I was told they leave from Mccarran airport like all the other air lines right in Las Vegas, I never evn thought that they were anything other than a commercial outfit.

But maybe I should rethink that and shut up about it for now.

Anyway, you are all a bunch of very knowledgeable people and thanks again for the input and for the tips and insight. Maybe one day, I'll get to really start racking up the frequent flyer miles like you do!

I think if you accumulate enough miles on Janet that you can get an upgrade from cargo to passenger on your next flight to Incirclik or Diego Garcia.

I'm only in it for the mileage

Hey, California_Jon, welcome aboard!

Listen, if you ever get the chance to catch a ride back to Vegas one weekend with someone who has a rental car or military vehicle, forego the trip on Red Stripe Airlines and try to get clearance to leave TTR via the back gate. It's a beautiful and interesting drive, neat small (REALLY small) towns, roads winding through the mountains, etc.

Pack plenty of lip moistureizer and don't forget to get a souvenir T-shirt from one of the ranches (and ONLY a T-shirt, unnerstan' ?).

California_Jon, welcome.

I should have checked your profile sooner. I'm sitting here in the Courtyard in Marina Del Ray typing this. You're pretty close by.

If you're interested & will be around, newself & I are getting together for a brew on Wed. night in Long Beach. You're welcome to join us.

E-mail me & let me know...we're going to go to Fishtales in LB.

Wow, thanks, Shadow. It would be totally cool to actually meet some of the people from the board! I should have posted my (kinda naive) question a week earlier, because I'm leaving today to do the apartment hunting thing in Las Vegas, then doing the move thing next week.

Darn!

I feel like I know some of you already. I even remember the post newself made WAY back when he explained why he chose the name newself. Maybe some of you will be in Vegas some weekend, I hope, I hope.

Thanks again, all, for being so nice to a young kid!

A few years back there was a guy leading overnight tours into the desert northwest of Vegas, the Area 51 region, promising "guaranteed UFO sightings." Sure enough, right over the "base that isn't there" at 4:30 or 5:00 each morning, a bright light would appear -- and seem to hover for a minute or so before fading from view.

What these maroons were seeing was the early-morning Janet shuttle's landing lights, head-on.

Janet a/c are a bunch of unmarked ex-Western 737s. Ownership is murky and undiscussed; it's either Air Force or a govt. subcontractor like EG&G. They're a common sight at McCarran, and they fly to some pretty uncommon places. If anyone can report on what the inflight breakfast is like, I'd be interested.

Well, it might be wise to take extra reading material on board, as I beleive the "shades are drawn" so don't expect to see any nice views.

"Janet" was (or probably still is) the call sign assigned to the 737 contractor flights from LAS to TTR (and other classified locations). The call sign probably has changed for security reasons, but "Janet" seems to have stuck, courtesy of the "Area 51" UFO and conspiracy theorists.

Did see a "Janet" 737 over in SAT a couple of months ago, but it was undergoing periodic maintenance at the Dee Howard facilities.

"Janet" does not leave from the main terminal at LAS -- they have their own secure terminal facilities on the west side of the field. That info is pretty much general knowledge and not classified.

And yes... if you can manage to wangle a pass to drive instead of fly it is an impressive, but lonely drive until you get close to the suburbs of Las Vegas.
