Self-checked Luggage

This may be old hat to some of you, but new to me. This morning at Anchorage airport I saw a completely self-serve luggage check station.

I had no luggage so I couldn't give it a try, but it appeared that you punched in your confirmation number and then, when your baggage tags printed, you applied them to your luggage and then popped your luggage down the chute.

Evidentally they are testing them in Seattle as well but I've never seen them. Anybody know anything about this? Do you get............MORE MILES????

I'ts a sad reflection on the level of service we have come to expect from airlines that we now consider this to be a possible improvement.
But heck, if we get miles

Considering how some of my bags have been handled, I think it would be an improvement in service if I could stow them myself. I try my best these days not to check in luggage. Self serve is fine with me.
