What to do in Zurich???

I arrive in Zurich for my first visit to Switzerland on Saturday morning. On Sunday, I will go to Brunnen to attend a conference for about a week. I just realized that I don't yet have a hotel for Saturday night.

Any suggestions for where I should stay or what to do on Saturday afternoon/evening and Sunday morning.

I like parks, museums, local culture, concerts. I'm not a big shopper.

Zurich Marriott.
Walking distance to the Central Train station and Old Town.
I believe the Hotel have a shuttle to pick you up from the Airport. Don't know now but used to be free.

Stay at the Eden-au-Lac. One if my favorite hotels anywhere. I stay there often. Small, boutique hotel with a great view of the lake. Ask for a lake view room on the second or third floor(ask for one of the remodelled rooms). Good French restaurant. This is a true, swiss hotel and not just another chain like the Marriott.
Walk on the Banhoff Str. and stop for coffee at Sprungli (be careful - you may go home with a handful of some of the best chocolate in the world). If the weather is nice, take a trip on the lake by boat. Walk around the old part of town (Alt Stadt), all within walking distance of the hotel.
I have spent alot of time in Zurich and love the city.

now - if you want to do me a favour, and you are in the mood of some wine, please ask for something (imported by) 'Martel' (about one third of their wines are) thank you.

Since travelling solo, I will probably be drinking by the glass. What do you recommend for a nice white for before dinner or with appetizer and a nice red to enhance the main course.

I had a great 1 day trip to ZRH last year. Thanks to Rudi's suggestion, I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Restaurant Kronenhalle Zrich. I spent the day wandering around the city visiting restaurants and churches. Had a couple of beers at the Zic Zac hotel. It's a nice city!

they change their 'offer by the glass' monthly - you can 100% trust the wine-butler's recommendation - anjoy!

and it is just a 3-4 minutes walk from the Eden au Lac to the Kronenhalle ... the concierge at the Eden can make the reservation (and also give you the easy to find directions). The Playboy, about 35 years ago (Gisela gifted me a one-year subscription, when she was away for a whole year in Exeter, UK ...) did feature the 'chocolate mousse' at the Kronenhalle as the world's best.

Any recommendations on how to get from the airport to the hotel. The hotel sent an email recommending a cab. I assume that a train is significantly less expensive. How easy will it be to take a train to the hotel?

Direct trains (the S 16) Zrich airport - Bahnhof Stadelhofen run every 30 minutes, leaving the airport at 02 and 32. And remember, trains in the Confoederation Helvetica (thats why the abbreviation for Switzerland is CH) are 'never' 1 minute late ...

The Bahnhof Stadelhofen is a 4 minute easy walk from the Eden au Lac.

Your best ticket is (2nd class, nothing would make first class paying for worth) a return ticket: valid 24 hours on all public transportations in Zrich (train, S-Bahn, trams, ships) and between Zrich and the airport. The price difference between the train ticket and a rtaxi ride makes up for more than a Kronenhalle dinner ...

Rudi's suggestion about the all day ticket purchased at the airport is an excellent one. I used this when I was visiting ZRH last month. Cost is only about US $9.85.

Have taken the train from the Stadlehffen to the airpoirt several times. My contact gives me cab money but last year I bought a little Swatch watch Duty-free with the savings. This year I did some advance Christmas shopping.

I will say, however, that though the trains are ALWAYS on time: the first run to the airport in the morning usually runs a few minutes late to meet all the trams and buses (thank goodness for me!)

p.s. If you are a walker, take the tram up to the top of the hill overlooking Zrich. (I believe it is called The erlit... ummmm... shoot can't remember) Anyway, everyone will know thge name and can direct you. This is a very pleasant and easy walk/hike through the countryside(actually along the ridge of a low mountain) and after about an hour there is a sky-tram that will take you back down the mountain and to the train where you can get back to the Stadlehffen. A very nice way to spend a couple hours and see the real CH.(I think you may need a couple coins to ride that sky-way.... and there are usually refreshments avaiable at the beginning of the walk but not along the route.... I walked it in December... the weather was chilly but mild!)
