Hmm, if we're doing former capitals, then I can add New York, Philadelphia, Annapolis, Colombo, Yangon, Nanjing, Rio de Janeiro, and St. Petersburg, and (Astana) to the list...

How about most obscure capital visited? Obviously going to places like Tuvalu where almost no one gets to is going to be fairly unique, but I wouldn't hesitate to say I might be one of very few FTers to be in Naypyitaw, Myanmar despite a fair amount of us that have visited that country.

I’ve been to 32 country capitals - 33 if you count Amsterdam as well as The Hague - including one then-capital of a country that no longer exists (Bonn, West Germany). In those, I’ve been to (*) 14 country capitols/ parliaments/ legislative buildings. (I’ve also been to 33 US state capitols, 7 Canadian territorial or provincial assemblies, and 2 Australian state assemblies.)

Tirana, Albania
*Canberra, Australia
Manama, Bahrain
Bridgetown, Barbados
Brussels, Belgium
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Phnom Penh, Cambodia
*Ottawa, Canada
Beijing, China
*San Jose, Costa Rica
*Zagreb, Croatia
Paris, France
*Budapest, Hungary
*Nairobi, Kenya
Luxemboug, Luxembourg
Skopje, Macedonia (before the name change)
*Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
*Valletta, Malta
Mexico City, Mexico
*The Hague and Amsterdam, Netherlands
*Oslo, Norway
Muscat, Oman
Panama City, Panama
Doha, Qatar
Singapore, Singapore
*Cape Town, South Africa
*Seoul, South Korea
Bangkok, Thailand
Abu Dhabi, UAE
*London, UK
*Washington, DC, USA
Bonn, West Germany (before reunification)

In addition, I’ve visited Edinburgh, Scotland, although I don’t count it as a country capital; I’ve ridden through Belgrade, Serbia (but didn't stop there); and I’ve been to the airports (including exiting one) that serve five more country capital cities but which are not actually in said cities.

These are not capital cities as BVI and San Juan are not sovereign states.

French Polynesia is not a sovereign state so Pape'ete isn't a capital city.

A quick count tells me I've been to 46 countries but only 39 capitals.

Three of the biggest:
USA, Canada, Germany - I've been many times but not to Washington, Ottawa or Berlin.
NZ many times but never to Wellington.
Grew up in Australia but only went to Canberra first two years ago!

I counted Almaty because it was the capital when I was there!

I didn't count anywhere I never left the airport.
