Is there a no-fly list for bad behavior?

From time to time one will hear of someone being banned from an airline for life due to really bad behavior. Are these bans common? Do they ever extend to other carriers?

I read too often about some of these violent people on planes; it just seems to me like it would be a good idea for the airlines to put offenders on a list so other airlines could be warned.
