I use them in Europe the whole time - the Easyjet app is particularly good. In the US i have mixed experiences - it all seems rather manual and random.

@lhrsfo the easyJet app is latest generation app which shows up on the home screen without logging in. This makes it very easy to use. Electronic BPs mean not fiddling around with bits of paper and finding a printer when away from home. Makes life much easier

I've had mobile boarding passes disappear from my phone moments before boarding, usually if there is a delay. I have it on my phone as a backup, but have gone back to using paper.

Again, simply snap a photo of your Mobile BP and it CAN'T disappear.

Due to multiple irrops flying United, I've learned it's easier to hand over the paper boarding pass to the GA when my flights go to hell. Thanks United!

Another option is to add it to Passbook (if smartphone is iphone). In this case it won't disappear and can be displayed with locked phone as well.

Yep.. Passbook, UA app, photo or even clicking the email link shortly before you hit the scanner. That's four ways.
Paper is good but I don't always have access to a printer or want to stop by the ticket counter kiosk to get a BP.

I've had mobile BP's disappear from Passbook.

I totally understand the convenience of mobile BP's. I use them to keep up with any gate changes or delays.

However, having been burned several times over the years, and dealing with United's poor IRROPs recovery the last few years, I like the redundancy of paper.

Totally agree!
Also using my Smartphone (Android) in the US can involve horrendous Data charges using the Apps. I always avoid turning the thing on until I'm in the airport Stateside and switch to a PAYGO Sim. Rather take my trusty Mac and search for a printer.

For this exact reason, when travelling outside my home country, I just make it a point to get to the airport the extra 15-20 mins early I need to find an agent or kiosk who can print my BP. Usually I need to see one anyway for a doc check or something.
