Options when Flight is Canceled
The second leg of my trip from ORD to BWI was canceled, but the first part, PHX to ORD, was not.
I am happy to land in DCA or IAD or BWI, but I assume they won't let me fly through a different airport (ORD) to do so, if the fist leg of my trip is still on schedule and not canceled.
American Airlines/US Air should be calling me back soon, but I just wanted to see what my options were, even if it means being charged a nominal fee.

In my experience AA will be flexible about your landing point. BWI, DCA, and IAD are all options. When my ORD-DCA was cancelled for DC snow this past winter, they happily flew me to LGA so I could get the Amtrak. Not unreasonable at all.

Have you started your trip? If so, just get on the next flight, and ask them for nearby airports if that's more convenient. If you have not yet started to travel, why not call them and pro-actively suggest different combinations (including direct flights if these exist) to get you to BWI as close to your original time as possible.

Under those circumstances airlines often actually prefer to change your booking a bit as you suggest, as it takes some pressure off the remaining flights on your original routing.
A few years back I was flying from Boston to Calgary via Salt Lake City to meet up with some friends and drive with them to Edmonton. The SLC-YYC flight was canceled. Everyone but me wanted to get on the next one. I asked the airline to put me on the YEG flight that was to leave a half hour later. They were delighted. My friends picked me up at a different airport, that's all.
