why do flight attendants in North American carriers have such a bad attitude

Ouch. Bit of an over-generalization perhaps? Remember this the next time you bump into a French policeman having a bad day. Or a German border guard. Etc, etc.

Me thinks it's a US passenger thing. Compare thus:
US based flyers can walk up to a gate and get on an earlier flight just because they are there. That doesn't happen in the rest of the world.
US based flyers are allowed to walk to the front of the line because they fly a lot. In the rest of the world it's generally one line for everyone.
US based airlines give the front cabin something and the back cabin nothing. The rest of the world seems to give everyone something with the pickings getting better at the front.
Outside the US, I've never seen a fight for overhead space, nor people bringing 5 items they can barely lift on their own.
These are examples of things that dictate the attitude of US based flyers towards flying, and you give that attitude to the FA's and they end up giving it back after a few hours of taking it.
Just my opinion....

I've seen good and bad on carriers from different countries. Some of the grumpiest FAs I have seen have been on European carriers - but then I think I would be a miserable cow if I had to do MAN-LHR-MAN-LHR-MAN in a day! Had an absolute witch of an FA on Qantas some years ago (malfunctioning AC gave several of us an impromptu shower and she had the nerve to tell us it was 'perfectly normal'!) Have had a couple of very grumpy crews (the whole staff!) on N. American carriers transatlantic, who basically turned off the lights, bullied people into turning off reading lights, and ignored call buttons for the maximum amount of time before throwing a muffin at us before landing. The last Lufthansa transatlantic I took the crew would not entertain the idea of doing anything out of sequence (I was gasping and wanted a water, soda, whatever, but was told not until they were ready to do drink service).
On the flip side, the Qantas crew I had from Dallas to Brisbane last year were amazing, so friendly, they really made the flight a pleasure. The Air Canada crew to Japan were warm, friendly and efficient. The WestJet FAs seem genuinely happy for the most part, and the Lufthansa intra-Europe staff are always welcoming and friendly.
