As much as I love the window I am very considerate to those around me. I will keep it open unless someone asks me to close it or if requested to do so by the cabin crew. I know how hard it is to watch a movie with a glare or work on a laptop.
I will however during the flight(Night portion when people are sleeping)keep the window shade open and when the sun comes up(but not open it fully just enough to let the light in) to help acclimate my body clock. I love having the Airshow map on along with looking outside the window at the cites we are flying over making up stories in my head about who lives there, what is life like in places like The Pas Manitoba, Moses Lake Washington, Kamloops BC etc. |
Wow, did not intend to set off such a crazy string... :)
Please don't get me wrong, I generally try to be accommodating, but on this particular flight, being so early, I wanted to sleep. That is the reason, I kept the shade down. For those saying that if the perk of the window seat is control of the shade and therefore the aisle should control access, I would disagree.. The perk of the window seat is that the window seat person can control the shade. The perk of the aisle seat is easy access to the aisle for lav visits and easy access to OH bins. Oh and easier deplaning. I personally prefer the aisle seat for these reasons. I could care less about whether the window shade is up or down when sitting in an aisle. This particular jerk, just thought he was in control of everything. I can be accommodating, but do me a favor, if I open the window shade for you, please do not sit and stare at me..... |

god i hate people who keep the shades open when there's sunlight coming directly in, esp on short flights.
it's radiation. |
I usually take the aisle and go by the rule that it's up to the person sitting in the window seat to do whatever they feel like with the shade. I carry my own sleep mask if need be and would never make any requests regarding the shade.
I dislike the policy of shutting all the shades on long-haul flights though, which seems to be common with most airlines. For people who want to sleep, the simple act of putting on a sleep mask readily provides the same result. On the other hand, if I don't want to sleep and would rather read instead, I can only do so in artificially-imposed low-light conditions, which are very bad on the eyes. As the ensuing darkness makes most people drowsy and reduces FA workload, I have a theory that it serves their vested interests to enforce this. Would love to see this overturned someday in favor of complimentary sleep masks. |

yeah, i am sure that the flimsy plastic shade is going to stop it cold in its tracks! @:-)
I've also seen mention of some voodoo skin creams that magically block radiation as well. I think they call it sunscreen, but there is no way a plastic shade could do it. |
All of these kind of threads come down to common sense, communication, common decency and treating people like you want to be treated
99.9 percent of the time, people are reasonable and can resolve anything |

C'mon, radiation? Do you wear a HASMAT suit every day?
AVOD? Can't you live without a screen blasting at you every minute? There's no need for what? Daylight?? No, it isn't an office so why pretend it's a bedroom? I agree that on red eyes you need consideration but daylight flights...? Would you be asleep if you were on the ground? It's day time, the sun shines. Converse, read, forget that 6 inch screen, you can live without it. Anyone would think that planes were packed with vampires the way some people want to travel. |
It took me a while to get used to using eyeshades as just having something touch my face was irritating enough to keep me awake. Many people have the same issue, so I can "see" the problem they may have.

Then you won't sleep, suck to be you. How is that the rest of the passengers' problem?
I don't have a problem anymore, but there are people who do that may have a problem using eye shades. :td: It's people who don't care about anybody else that make the world a tougher place to coexist in. Have some compassion for others and your life may be better.:-: |
ex-ACT-ly
the issue is that all the folks who want to do just what THEY WANT TO DO when THEY WANT TO DO it simply don't give a rat's ****** about anyone else a bit of consideration for others makes EVERYONE'S situation a lot better |
I prefer the shade up during the day, unless it creates too much glare on someone's screen. It's been a while since I sat at the window, but I have been asked to close it.

The older you get access to the toilet is far more important than the window seat.
Especially if one likes to spend long-haul hoisting a few.:D |

I think you failed at basic logic.
I don't care about your personal problem. Those are your to deal with. You cannot decide how an entire plane should act based on "well, it irritates my eyes to much to sleep", in that case you won't sleep. Sucks for you, doesn't matter for anyone else on the plane. Interesting to see that for people to follow your whims is considerate. For people to call you out on your BS and tell you that's not something you can expect is rude. Yeah, guess who the self-centered one is. If the cabin is darkened by the FAs that's a sign for you that the cabin is supposed to be darkened. Not that hard to figure out. |
