Spent some time in Tokyo and 5 days in Seoul and wow, these things seemed to be on 2/5 travelers. I couldn't decide if they were sick or trying to avoid getting sick by other people, OR a combo!?

I'd say you'll get jack squat from Ryanair, get a doctor's note from the GP like a get out of work free card and then call the insurance guys. If they are able to make a decent offer, then decide if there's no offer, then depending on how much money you're gonna lose, you'll have to decide.
I have never understood the recations to masks. I dont like wearing them but I do hwen i have a cold to avoid spreading germs around the world, and certainly wish the person I caught the cold from had been wearing one !!
Others wer them due to polution or to avoid hay fever, to avoid catching colds, avoid wearing make up......etc etc many reasons but no problems for you I think.

I agree its not Ryanairs problem, OP have insurance, why the hesitation to check if he can claim and then if he needs to he will know ?

But it's quite a different matter when people exhort passengers to wear them using vapid clichs such as "courteous traveler" and "it's the least that sick people can do when traveling."

I dont think its "vapid" it is being considerate of others around you.

Sometimes, the trip itself isn't important, but hotels and airlines have made it prohibitively expensive to cancel and rebook your trip. So people fly sick and hope for a healthy trip.

There are too many self-appointed hall monitors and self-important busy bodies who believe it is their role in life to declare what is "considerate" and then press their views on others using silly clichs and weak attempts at moral suasion.

there may be a kernel of truth in that statement but conversely there are too many people who walk around with a "I dont give a damn about anyone else attitude" and its just sad.
Its seriously common sense that if you are really ill and you cant cancel (and lest face it, most of us cannot afford to) that at least you might make even a half hearted attempt to not cough on others in th hopes that maybe someday someone might be that kind to you.

Kind of OT, but try Black Elderberry Extract like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Natures-Answer...ack+elderberry

I recommended it to all my friends who got stubborn not going away cough, and it works for all of them. I first discovered when I had a cough lasting over a months and kept me up every night. It doesn't stop the cough or feel any different in the first few days. But after a week or 2 using it 3-4 times a day.. the cough was gone completely.

Whenever I see people wearing masks on planes or in airports I usually think that they are trying to avoid catching germs rather than avoiding spreading them.
