Passport question

Need advice. My passport has no more free space AT ALL. The expiration date is Aug 2017. Should I get more pages or should I just renew early
Thanks,

I'm not sure what's easiest for you but personally i'd just renew early and start fresh. You could also request a larger passport that has more blank pages (see http://travel.state.gov/content/pass...ces/pages.html) then at least you won't have to worry about this happening again as quickly.

It seems Passport control stamp all over different pages, ....what I do ,is clip a few blank pages together (paper clip works) and then pages get full before starting new pages.

To answer your question...just get a new one!

I would suggest getting a new one and requesting the one with more pages.

I say get a new one too - the large economy size. I also say to edit your post to remove your personal e-mail address.

Having them add pages used to be free but is now $85 or so. You will get 2 years of use. Get a new passport, asking for extra pages, and the $140 cost will last 10 years. I would get a new passport and check the box for the 52 page version. I have heard of someone asking for 2 sets extra pages at the time of application in order to not have to send the passport in and also to get 2 sets of extra pages for $85.

If you get a new passport, you won't be able to add any more pages to it.

Depending on how quickly I anticipate filling up pages, I would consider paying for an additional insert or two (at the same time) in my existing passports because it won't be an option after this year if things stay on the decided course.

As of when I renewed last year, the 52-page passports are now the same price as the 28-page ones. Well worth it, and the difference in thickness isn't really all that noticeable in use.

Huh? Are you saying that USA passports issued in 2016 or later will not be able to have pages added later? Or do you mean that starting in 2016, USA passports starting with additional pages won't be issued as a matter of policy and people will need to either renew very early or (possibly) have pages added later?

A side question - if you get a new passport but the old passport is still valid and has some pages left, can you keep using that one until it completely fills up before switching to the new one?

No. Getting a new passport invalidates the old one.

IME you get the old passport back, but it is clearly marked as invalid and has holes punched in it for emphasis.

Correct, if your passport is from a nation that will return it. (Canada does, but my old passports aren't longer valid for travel.)

They do that in case you have valid visas in your old passport. Keep that in mind if you do. Take both passports with you.

Indeed, that is the current position when we get a new version of US passports by some point in 2016.

Even today, requests for first time additional page inserts in brand new, undamaged passports issued this year are now being syatematically refused -- absent an "emergency" -- after issuance at least; and such passport bearers are being told to consider applying for a renewal passport.

If the passport was issued after October 2014, additional page inserts are going to be tough (and tougher to get). And when the page insert stock runs out, forget about it, as purchases of additional page inserts aren't what they used to be. That will make it tough also on those or with pre-October 2014 passports who may want additional pages in an otherwise unexpired passport.
