No surprise. There really is no alternative since Airbus is out of the question.

Airbus has a new factory in Mobile, AL. However, they'll build the A320 there, not the tanker version of the A330 that they originally proposed.

Why can't the Air Force use 777-200LR, 787-9, or use the closest thing to the 767 tanker so spare parts can be shared, which might be a 767-300ER? The 747-8 is almost an orphan with few users, such as Lufthansa and Korean Air.

The Secret Service probably would prefer a four-engined plane.

Not to mention size. What rooms or areas would have to be cut to fit everything into a 767 or 777?

Why would Airbus be out of question? It's a plane manufactured by thousands of suppliers from many different countries including the U.S. What is different than any Boeing plane? Just sayin.

I like the "Air Force beluga 1" sounds.

Where do the profits come home to roost? Yes, Boeing and Airbus both use parts and suppliers from all over, but the bottom line is where the profits and taxes are.

Regardless of reality, giving such a high-profile contract to "the Europeans" is a non-starter politically.

There's a reason Boeing runs ads in movie theaters despite nobody in the audience actually buying anything from Boeing.

Air China just started flying new 748's PEK-JFK daily this month and when PRC's President make his next visit to the US (and elsewhere ...) expect to see him fly on specially reconfigured 748 by CA. It's about time POTUS can do a "status match" LOL and his will definitely have more "toys" & gadgets on AirForceOne where as theirs is basically a regular commercial one.

there is never any doubt that the next AF1 will be based on the 747-8.
(having the Airbus A380 as the AF1 is like having the POTUS driven
around in a Citroen or Mercedes, not gonna happen)

what I'd like to know is what airplane will become the next-next AF1
in 20 to 30 years. By then, Boeing will have ended the 747-xxx
program for ever. Perhaps a supersonic AF1? (yeah, keep dreaming)

bugging techniques and hardware have improved by a million miles since
the last time, so this new 747-8 will have all the "extra" installed by certain
U.S. agencies and the Chinese will have no way of finding them.

In addition, the US government would almost certainly require the planes to be built in the US. Airbus isn't going to set up a production line for the A380 to make two planes.

Last presidential election cycle, one of the primary candidates (I forget which one) was trashed because he had some campaign posters printed in Canada.

No way would any president allow the government to buy a plane for him from outside the US.

This. Plus the extra deck allows communications etc. to be above the other areas of aircraft. More practical.

(In response to the 777 vs 748.)

This clearly demonstrates that taxpayers' interests are not even part of the equation. He or she should fly commercial like most other world leaders.
