Should you whisper if speaking a foreign language?

When in another country that speaks a different language, I tend to whisper to the person I'm traveling with. I wonder if sign language is hard to learn. On the other hand, sign language attracts too much attention.

No, I don't. Why would you think about having to whisper? People in other countries are aware about the existence of other languages.

Whispering is more likely to attract attention than any of your other options.

What would you be talking about that would require you to whisper?

In those circumstances, I don't speak at all. I just grunt and wave my arms aound. In the event of an emergency, I emit a high-pitched squeal.

If I see people around me whispering I tend to think they have something the weant to hide, bordering on rude. Simply I would ask why ??

In similar circumstances I just communicate in Morse code using eye winks (left eye = dash; right eye = dot). Usually it works out fine, though once I got beat up when a man thought I was trying to flirt with his girlfriend.

Wasn't thinking that at all

I would suggest Arabic and Hebrew (since they sound similar IME ) speakers should whisper everywhere they go. And look furtive. Exercises the public's paranoia

My wife is American and most of our travel is in Europe. She whispers because she doesn't want to attract the attention of other 'murricans who upon hearing her accent tend to bellow 'Say where u frum?' at an obnoxious volume.

She's taking classes in Glaswegian as an alternative
