Skinny seats...sore butts

http://online.wsj.com/articles/skinn...nes-1414602406

When are we--everyone--going to stand up and say enough is enough and get UA (and the others) to stop this insanity? 30"; 28" on the 737 MAX? 10 across instead of 9.

...or like the lemmings to the sea are we?

This was interesting...

...Boeing 777-200s are already being expanded from 247 seats up to 289 seats. One big change on the 777: American is installing 10 seats across each coach row, up from nine. That shrinks the width of each seat to 17 inches, down from 18 and 18.5 inches. Emirates, Air France , Air Canada , Air New Zealand and others have all made that change; Delta and United so far have refused, deeming 17 inches too tight for very long trips overseas.

American has estimated that adding more seats to planes and better matching the size of the aircraft to each trip flown will create about $600 million for the merged airline by 2015. It says new seating will meet comfort standards.

“If people don’t like it, they won’t buy it,” a spokesman says....

The only way you can make an impact is via their pocket books.

...which really means buy C/F or just stop flying. Nearly all airlines are moving to smaller, slimmer seats at different rates of speed.

When people want low fares over all else, space is gonna shrink.

Perhaps inferred (incorrectly I hope!), but I doubt the airlines would imply than when they lower prices!

I guess the author missed the UA 787 fleet's miserable 17" slimline seats.

Delta already has a high density configuration in comparison, so their need for 10-across to reduce CASM isn't as important as AA's. UA is really the lone holdout now.

A comfortable 17" seat is infinitely better than an uncomfortable 18" one.

For one, I won't buy it. Sorry AA. A IAD-PEK or EWR-BOM trip is already bad enough in Y, I need that inch!

And kudos to United (and Delta) to resist.

Am I missing something? I thought UA Dreamliners and Boeing jets are 17" width...

I wonder how well the airlines are going to be enforcing the rules about a PAX significantly encroaching on others? I can certainly see that becoming a real issue.

All these comments echo the general understanding that most have. This is the airlines responding to customer demand. We may whine and moan about space, but when presented with the decision of space and comfort vs. cost, we choose cost.

When the seats get so uncomfortable that people refuse to pay to sit in them, the airlines will reverse their strategy. But as long as the flying public votes with their wallets to save money at the expense of comfort, the airlines will be happy to oblige.
