I got both entry and exits Swiss stamps and my "exit" was off to Ireland, which is also in Schengen. Not that I'm complaining, I love stamps! :)

And I also got an Ireland stamp as well, which I was not expecting for the reasons you mentioned.

Now if I could only get my Machu Pichu/Inca Trail stamps back... ;)

Ireland is not part of Schengen.

Yes, this is a common misconception. The UK are Ireland (and a few other countries) are members of the EU, but not the Schengen area.

This is useful to know if you want to maximize your time in Europe, since you can explore Ireland and the UK for up to 90 days (though that sounds like a bit much to me personally), then take the chunnel to the EU, where you get an additional 90 days to explore.

In San Marino, they also affixed a physical stamp, much like a postage stamp.

I have the same from Bahrain… with a picture of the Emir.

You will only get a Swiss Entry stamp.

As Switzerland joined the Schengen Area there are no more border controls between Switzerland and Italy and therefore no stamp.

I forgot to mention we will be flying out of Rome for the return. Will I get one upon leaving Italy?

When leaving the Schengen zone by departing from FCO, the odds are likely that you will get an exit stamp there but that is not certain. A high proportion of my FCO departures to the UK or US (or elsewhere beyond the Schengen Zone) have not been stamped; and sometimes they don't even open my US passport.

You should get one if you are leaving the Schengen zone at Rome. If they don't stamp, ask for one.

I knew N.Ireland and UK were obviously not part of the Schengen, but thought Ireland was since they used the Euro. Then again, countries don't have to be part of a country to use a specific currency...

Sorry, you are going to love me, but have to correct you again.

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland and the UK are not two different entities.

Actually you'll love me, when I meant "Ireland", I was referring to the south or Rep. of Ireland. :D

N.Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales are the UK. :) ^^ I meant the GB island aka Britain, but we didn't learn that in school... :(

I wish the "south" had a leprechaun on their passport stamp, but at least it's nice and green!

I'm going to call the Dominican Rep. by it's old name: Hispaniola!

I'm getting confused, your original statement said "N.Ireland and UK"????

Anyway, why are we going rounds on this?

I love passport stamps. Being that I live in Shenzhen and often travel to HK, Im happy HK no longer stamps my passport. Im running low on pages as it is. Now I'm able to use my passport the full 10 years.

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is a different entity than the United Kingdom -- even as Northern Ireland is an entity within the United Kingdom, it is not within Great Britain.

Easiest way to remember is that Britain is one island and Ireland is another... actually, scratch it, there is no easy way to remember ;)
