CRJ700s

I am sure we have had this here before but I don't usually travel on US smaller internal jets.

So what is the overhead like on these CRJ700s? Will I get 9" thick bag in one - in First class?, in Coach class? Will they want me to automatically gate-check a computer roller bag, etc.

Thanks for any views.

I have flown this jet with United and on most flights they gate check rolling bags and usually other larger carry on bags if you also have a personal item. The overheads are pretty tight and the information below from American Eagle shows the dimensions which I assume are similar for other airlines as well.

Bombardier CRJ-700 Storage

While Carry-on capacity is limited to smaller briefcase and purse sized pieces, all American Eagle aircraft feature our popular planeside Valet service for those larger pieces of carry-on luggage.

Area Cabin Width Height Depth
Under seat
First 33" 16.5" 10.5"
Main 33" 16.5" 10.5"

Overhead Bin
First 52.5" 14" 9.5"
Main 52.5" 14" 9.5"

Not the same regional jet, but I just flew four segments on USAirways regional jets, and I was stunned to find that my Red Oxx XS Aviator, which is 8 inches in depth if packed snugly and not to the gills, didn't easily slide into the overhead compartments on some of these regional jets. I got it to fit with a few shoves, but since I'd underpacked my bags, I wasn't expecting any issue at all. Some of the regional jet bins are seriously small.

I asked about my bag in this post and found out mine fit though just without lots of room to spare. Can you share your bag model or more specific size?

BTW I would take the stated luggage manufacturer dimensions with a grain of salt as they can be inexact to put it mildly.

I had in mind the B&R 250X - nominally 7.5 x 12.5 x 16.5 and not too much bigger in reality.

UA's CRJ700 OH bins are small in terms of heights - something like the B&R 250X unexpanded will easily fit mainline jets, even when slightly expanded its 7.5" specs - and, of course under the seat in front of you. The newer CJR700 have a bigger bin opening, that is quoted as up to 10" but Mrs. L's 22" roller and my soft 22" Mother Lode/TLS weekender is usually tagged & left at the jetway door checked anyway.

If you are flying F, GA/FA should leave you alone & they are focused on gate-checking all the bigger carry-ons (i.e. all those "regulations-sized" 22 inchers just won't go up there, too narrow or tight to fit thru) There is very limited space onboard to store these rollers, so practically everyone is asked to gate-check the bags, except for regular briefcases & large totes. Beware that you'll find some of the OH bin space already taken if you are among the first group to board (by FA/crews since they are also storing theirs ...)

Besides, depending on load factor, they ofen must do weight balancing & often move pax around to redistribute for take-offs.

If your laptop is a sleeve, pull it out for boarding to make it easier - as 9" will not fit up there. Here's link to a photo of UA's CRJ700 - http://www.flickriver.com/photos/caribb/85819514/
