Question about name issue on ticket

I booked a ticket for myself and a friend of mine through a 3rd party, with one leg in the US, the second leg is an international segment. My friend's name, who is on the same itinerary, is Jane Smith-Mitchell (pseudonym) according to her passport. However, when the ticket was booked, they put Smith as the middle name. The booking confirmation as it came through in my email looks ok (Jane Smith Mitchell) but when I select seats it says Mitchell, Jane Smith.

I caught this later on but the 3rd party will not correct the mistake, insisting it will be fine. Should I be worried?

As I was passing through international boarding/controls at JFK not long ago, a woman next to me had the same "oh come on, it's the same thing, it's just a typo" and the agent told her they had been clearly instructed that "close enough" wasn't close enough.

If it were domestic, I wouldn't worry too much. International - I'd push back to the ticketing agency and get it right.

Either way, let us know what happens - this questions comes up periodically.

I ended up calling AA and they added a note to the reservation with the correct hyphenated last name, in case there are any issues later on. They also said that they didn't anticipate it being a problem since all names are there on the ticket.
