Would you buy souvenir during a trip?

I don't really buy souvenir on a trip coz it's expensive. What about you?

no useless trinkets
i either buy consumables (food & drinks) , or items that i would and could buy at home, but at the source/country-of-origin because it just feels a bit more special that way.

e.g. german knives, austrian glasses, italian ties, english shoes, etc

Our rule is you have to be able to eat it, wear it, or scrapbook it.

I used to collect shot glasses, but they took up too much space, I hardly use them anymore and they're a PITA when you move.

Now I like to get something useful, like something to wear. No magnets/shot glasses/etc.

I used to have a strict no souvenir rule, but over the last few years I've tried to bring back something nice from countries which really mean something to me.

On my mantlepiece is:
A set of candles from Sri Lanka
An ancient urn from Jordan
A rubber duck from a New York brunch
A KLM Business class Bols collectable house thing
A recreation of a Moai from Easter Island

What kind of souvenirs are you looking at that are so expensive?

I always bring something home that reminds me of where I visited, and rarely would I call my souvenirs expensive.

Trip to New England: maple syrup bought at the farm that produced it, $8 per jug

Rome: necklace from a street vendor, 10€

London: vintage British novels from a used book store, £2 each.

Netherlands: tulips of course.

For me souvenirs are about the memory, the moment, the experience, not about splurging.

My souvenirs tend to be consumable, like Belgian chocolates. I don't have room for more dust-gathering tchtchokes. That said, I treasure the compressed-marble-dust Coliseum I bought at the Rome airport (it was not expensive) that serves as a bathroom soap dish. A bit of kitsch can be fun.

Now, that German cuckoo clock I received as a gift? Haven't been able to make myself display it. And those things ARE expensive!

A wife

I rarely buy things mostly because I tend to travel light and for long periods of time. That said I have brought back a fair amount of earthware but that it comes from my ancestral home so it it a true souvenir.

I tend to buy artwork if I find something that really speaks to me - but I also have a huge collection of framed photos that I've taken on my travels.

In every new country I travel to I try to find something that I can hang on my Christmas Tree every winter.

Occasionally if I see a refrigerator magnet that appeals to me I will grab that as well. But, the Christmas Tree ornament is always the goal. Sometimes I get a bit creative with them and just turn a toy or something else into an ornament. Sometimes I find actual ornaments. But, it can be kind of fun to search.

I limit my souvenirs to alcohol or Christmas ornaments. We now have a striking collection of spirits from all over the world that are fun to pull out for parties. We also enjoy our Christmas tree full of reminders of our travels.

Mostly photos, and my daughter collects postcards, so I try to bring one home for her. I'm kind of a foodie, so if there is something that you just "can't get at home" I am often tempted to pick that up. Of course, I always have to weigh that against the hassle factor of schlepping home--especially if it is liquid over 3 oz.
