I often have one or even two suitcases inside my biggest one. The first time a friend of mine saw me take a suitcase out of my suitcase and then another one of the second one he laughed a lot and told me it was just like the Matryoshka dolls (Russian dolls).

It's a battle trying to get all this in.

My luck, the TSA would tell me it is against policy to put a purse in a tote and a battle would ensue, so I never tried it. Now I know it's "legal" and will start doing this. Logic tells me I can put anything that isn't against the law in my carry on, including a spare purse, but as we all know there is no logic when going through THE LINE.
Yup, always. I use a Longchamps Pliage shopper bag which folds and stores easily if I configure things differently on the return.

I've been doing this for as long as I can remember. I was a fan of tiny purses for a long time, and I generally need more storage space than that from my "personal item." I figure if it fits under the seat in front, it's not really anyone's business what's nested in it!

Years ago, I purchased a collapsible carry-on bag. When not in use, it collapses to an inch thick. On my return, I check in my normal carry-on and bring the collapsible one into the cabin.
