According to the Associated Press, the plane, an A300 en route to Birmingham from Louisville, crashed on its approach to the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

From USAToday:
Certainly sounds like a rapid drop.

Certainly sounds like a rapid drop.
Flight tracking site flightaware.com shows the cargo plane, identified by the site and the FAA as flight UPS1354, dropped more than 9,000 feet over the course of two minutes about four minutes before the crash.

Strange. Judging from the photo the front of the plane stayed intact. It's fortunate the plane crashed in an open area. BHM is in the NE corner of city near schools, houses and businesses.

To high?
Based on the plane descending so quickly (If the flightaware chart is accurate), it's almost as if they were coming into to high on approach and worked hard to get the plane down to the runway.

Sad for the families. I fly my Cessna into BHM from ATL whenever I have meetings there. It's a very easy approach so I can only wonder if it was a mechanical issue.

An eyewitness who lives across from the runway said that it was on fire prior to impact. Another said that the engines were "sputtering" when it flew over her residence.
