Binoculars underrated

I find myself unable to travel without binoculars nowadays. When I bring it, even if I think I won't use it, I still end up doing so all the time. Whenever you see a bird, building or anything from afar it's lots of hazzle taking out that camera and shoot a photo to get a better view. Most things are better to enjoy live than on a photo anyway.

Anyone else thinking the same way as I do?

Extra weight, so I found I never lugged them along.

I don't bring them when I travel for business, but my wife and I typically bring them when we travel for pleasure.

I bring them sometimes. For example, we often stay at the Marriott Harbor Beach in Fort Lauderdale and I like sitting on the balcony and watching the cruise ships come and go. Binoculars pretty much a must doing this.

I rarely bring them, except on family vacations, but I often wish I had them. Just not enough to carry them around everywhere.

I carry a small monocular and the (minimal) added weight/sieze is negligible.

Agree. I carry a small pair of 9x28s and use them a lot for looking at architecture. Most recently great looking at Sagrada Familia.

I have a fairly nice pair of compact 8x21s I carry with me on business and family travel. I'm in construction and they've frequently been useful for looking at elevated parts of buildings up close without the hassle of trying to find bin space for an extension ladder.

I'm also much more comfortable handing them over to others to have a look than I would be with DSLR and zoom lens.

I used to have a "what's the point" attitude to binoculars after using cheap ones - then someone lent me a small pair of Leica binoculars.....

If you tried bringing them just once, perhaps you won't find them to be merely extra weight!
