buying up to first

i have noticed that a lot of seats(on uc and lh) in F tatl are empty when we fly in(I) some form of biz class . when, and where does one successfully buy their way up to F, and how much does it cost. i have tried the nice clothes scheme, and that politeness stuff, how much money, and where. by the way we have no status, which i do not think helps either.

On lh, you usually can only buy up by paying the fare difference

Some airlines may offer a discounted cash price at the airport to upgrade, others will not. You can still fly F if you are willing to pay the full fare difference.

UA offers a pay up either at the check in kiosk at the airport or if you check in online 24 hrs before your flight. A couple of weeks ago, I flew from SFO-PEK on UA. I had a (T) economy ticket. When I was checking in online, UA offered a $1,300 upgrade to J or 30K miles plus $600. I took the 30K +$600.

One thing though, you will not get the extra miles to your UA account as the miles will be on the original ticket purchased.

Many times its luck of the draw to get an offer to buy up with UA seemingly the most consistent offering at check in if available. However UA Global First isn't much to write home about...
