Check in for connecting flights
Hello all,
Apologies in advance if this has been asked; I did search but didn't come up with exactly what I was looking for.
I have a question regarding check-in for connecting flights with non code-share airlines.
I have a trip booked as follows: DUS --> FRA (LH), FRA --> ORD (LH), ORD --> PHX (AA). I believe it is on one ticket, as I have just one e-ticket receipt/itinerary (I'm not a very seasoned traveller if you can't tell).
I was able to succesfully use online check-in with LH, but it only checked me in through ORD. I assumed I must have to check in with AA for the ORD --> PHX portion and tried to use online check-in but got the error below:
"We are unable to check you in. You may check-in for flights originating on and operated by American Airlines, American Eagle and/or American Connection. For AA codeshare flights operated by our partner carriers, please check-in online or at the airport with the operating carrier."
I then spoke to an LH rep at DUS (no AA info desks here) and she said my bags will be checked through but I need to check in with AA at ORD and get my boarding pass. Is this correct? I know I need to collect my bags for customs and re-check for the final leg, is this where I can check in? If not then where? If AA sees I'm not checked in (on their system) for the first two legs will they assume I'm a no-show and give my seat up?
A semi-related question: while managing my reservation with AA it gives me the option to pick a seat, but only upgrade seats are available. Will they save one of these for me even if I don't pick it now? Or should I pay the $ to be sure I have a seat? I'm currently unassigned.
I hope these questions make sense. If anything needs clarification please let me know.
I was scheduled to return today through LHR but my flight was cancelled. As an unexperienced traveller in a foreign country I just want to make sure I have everything straight and can make it home! Thanks in advance.
