How common are diversions?

Twice.
SQ from SIN-LHR on A380, diverted to DXB due to medical emergency. Only an hour or so out of SIN, I saw the guy with the problem speaking to staff, and it all went downhill from there. I was watching the moving map, when suddenly it changed the destination to DXB... Ended up getting to LHR about 3hrs after schedule, meaning that UKBA were hideously under-equipped, and had to wait in line for almost two hours to clear immigration.
Second time was on a DJ E-170 CBR-TSV, diverted to BNE due to technical issues with the aircraft. No one seemed particularly worried - my guess was that they would have rather landed the aircraft at base rather than have to deal with whatever it was in TSV. We were transferred to an E-190 in BNE and continued on, arriving in TSV about 2hrs after schedule.

Numerous times -
1 - UA - LAX to DSM, diverted to LAS due to mechanical enroute
2 - AA - BOS to SFO, diverted to SJC for fuel due to ATC delay at SFO
3 - AS - PVR to SFO, diverted to MZT due to mechanical enroute
4 - UA - ORD to ALB, diverted to BDL due to snow at ALB

In my 2 years at the airport now, I had to handle 10 diverted flights. Most of them coming from AMS, because AMS is very vulnerable to fog, so Brussels is an ideal diversion. It happens more then you might think. But then it's mostly just a couple of hours, planes need to divert (mainly because of weather problems or medical emergency).

It's not too uncommon in the Florida Panhandle where the commercial airports tend to be built adjacent to large waterways and winter can bring quite heavy fog. I know more than one person who has finished their journey home with a 100+ mile bus ride from Dothan, Alabama when that was the nearest airport with acceptable runway visibility.

I only maybe one round trip a year but so far one in 14 segments (including one caused by the diversion). Right before Thanksgiving last year on DL from MSP to SUX we encountered pea soup and were unable to land causing a divert back to MSP. DL put us up in a hotel* for the night and we finally made it home later the next day.
*they only gave us vouchers because the original pilot got ill causing a delay. Annoyingly the delay caused while waiting for another pilot lead to the fog getting there before we did.

Reading stories here, and talking to friends who fly more RJs than I do, they don't seem to be that uncommon. However, in well over 1,500 flights, I've only ever had 2 diversions for any reason:
1) NW flight MSP-YVR, diverted to SEA for about 90 minutes due to YVR being fogged in.
2) CO flight CDG-EWR turned back to CDG halfway over the atlantic (8 hour+ flight to nowhere) due to EWR/DC/NY/BOS all closed for a blizzard.
Any other thoughts?

I was wondering if that delta flight where the pilots forgot to land (due to their computer game playing) at Minneapolis...if they had how some delta flights have..the computer screen that you can see where the flight was in the air---how would have passangers reacted.

I've only had one diversion, flying BKK-PEK on CA early this year.
En route, my gf and I were informed that due to "fog" (more likely, smog) at PEK, we would need to land at an airport -- TYN -- that neither of us had ever heard of. But we were in J and the cabin was pretty empty, so it was comfy. The FA was a good sport, too, and took this pic of me outside the aircraft. Interesting note: it was January 10 and it was freezing outside. But if you look closely at the curtain inside the door, you can see the direction and strength of the (warm) airflow within the cabin. So when you stood within a few feet of the open door, you were still warm. ^

Two times in 15 years. All on EK.
1 - GLA to DXB diverted to Bahrain due to thunderstorms in DXB
2 - DXB - GLA diverted to LHR due, to snowstorms in GLA.
Why do I travel to Scotland during the winter!

Since the 80's I have had 10..I fly twice a week and have for the last 6 years. Prior to that it was 4 times a month on average save for the 2 year stint I did in a cubicle.
3 were medical emergencies, 7 were weather related. Never had a mechanical diversion, although there have been 2 mechanical incidents, both were near the destination airport. One was a partial hydraulic failure on a CRJ, the other was a high oil temp reading in one of the engines on an MD-80.
Never diverted in a CRJ.

I can only think of 2 diversions. I think that living on the West Coast cuts down on my chances.
In the 80's, I was flying from LHR to ORD on BA. They shutdown ORD for a couple of hours due to thunderstorms. We were diverted to Toronto. Some guy on our flight ended up with a medical issue and was taken off the plane in Toronto. Can you imagine his relatives getting a call saying that their loved one was in the hospital in Toronto.
The other diversion was a few years ago. We were flying from ATL to Louisville, KY. We ended up getting diverted to Nashville. We were given the option of flying back to Atlanta or a renting a car. We got a car and drove through the night.

My home airport for the first 22 years of my life was CMX. The combination of the unpredictable U.P. weather and small planes has given me the pleasure of a large number of diversions. Off hand I can remember landing in DLH, MQT, GRB, and CWA.
When I was diverted to CWA they did not arrange any alternate transportation and it was looking like I wouldn't get on a flight for a couple of days. No rental car company at CWA would allow a one way rental to CMX. I ended up renting a car at CWA and driving it to GRB. From there I was able to get a one way rental to CMX.

Two in the past 20 years:
- From VKO to GOJ(!) due to high winds in Moscow
- From MAN to EDI due to fog over huge swathes of England (or something like that) which meant the only place we could land was Scotland!

2 times for me in almost 3MM of flying.
1) ORD-LAX diverted to SAN during LA riots following Rodney King verdict, but eventually got routed SAN-LAX several hours later
2) AMS-IAD diverted to Shannon, Ireland when someone had heart attack on plane; eventually got to IAD after a few hours delay w/ getting passenger off, paperwork, refueling; missed original connection to LAX & because I called UA (pre-CO takeover) from Shannon managed to snag the last available seat of the last IAD-LAX flight of the day. What sucked is that I had the flu/had 102 temp, so it was a lo-o-n-g day of flying.
My sister who rarely flew had a diversion to Indianapolis on LAX-ORD flight due to weather; she was traveling onward to FRA & literally did the run through the airport just before LH closed its doors when she finally got to ORD.
Cheers.

i don't understand. i have had about 20, maybe 30, diversions. storms in ord, dfw, pbi, mia, iad. snow in bos, bdl, fog in lga, mxp, vce. hurricans in the carriabean good for at least 10. terrible airlines in central america(taca) good for at least half a dozen.
the best one was in le ceiba to san predro sula during the war in Nicaraga., and happened to our 3 travel companions. the props on the dash-8 were turning, 2 big guys got on the plane and told the three to get off. they said no, and the 2 guys pulled guns and said they would shoot the 3 if they did not get off. they were diverted.
