Not to hijack this thread but I just wanted to know the possibility of doing this!

Philly-Venice (stopover in Munich for 3 days)
I checked the routing on United and it seems to be the route, would they allow me to stay in Munich for stopover?

Venice-Philly (stopover in Paris)

I am checking on UA and AA and it seems this route is not possible. UA has LH and US as star alliance and all connections are via Germany. Similarly AA has hub in LHR (partnership with BA, which I won't touch due to high fuel charges e.t.c).

First of all, is it possible that I can request stopover in both directions for an open jaw flight or booking it O/W on different carriers?

Argggh! Another fish swimming in my February trout pond. Do get the USAirways card to reduce the miles consumption rate and get the sign on bonus. Ideas: hit Paris then fly to Nice and train around The Riviera, zip to Rome and train into Termini then train around Italy, or hit Madrid and train down to The Rock and on into Morocco or Spanish Morocco. Weather can be hit or miss in February.

Stopovers are typically* allowed in hubs. MUC is a LH hub, so you can stop there on the way to Venice (or where ever). CDG is an AF hub, so you'd have to fly a SkyTeam airline in order for that to qualify as a stopover. If you're flying *A, you can have a stopover in pretty much any *A hub (VIE, WAW, ZRH, MUC, FRA, etc). If you're flying 1W, you can have a stopover in 1W hubs (MAD, LHR,...)

*I said "typically" because you can sometimes have stopovers in other cities, especially focus cities, but very rarely (if ever) is that possible with outstations.

lol... You're starting your last paragraph with "first of all" ?!

It depends if you're talking about a paid ticket or an award ticket. There is a BIG difference. Generally, stopovers on paid tickets are expensive. (There are notably exceptions, such as Middle Eastern airlines - QR, EK.) Airlines assume that if you really need to travel from A to cities B and C, if you want to go A-B-C-A, then it's most likely a business trip and they charge you for it, often making the price more expensive than 2 round trips (A-B and A-C). Stopovers are typically allowed on award itineraries, but that depends on individual program rules. DL states in their rules that they allow 1 free stopover OR 1 OJ (although many have reported that they have been able to get 1 stopover AND 1 OJ on SkyMiles tickets). Other programs (e.g. Flying Blue) allow OW awards, in which case you can pretty much do whatever you want because you're piecing together 2 OW tickets, and as such you can definitely have a double open jaw, and possibly 2 stopovers.

@:-)Bear in mind that you also have trains in Europe. (Big things, they ride on rails... you might have seen them in foreign movies.) You don't necessarily need to fly. From Paris you can get to Bruxelles (Brussels), London, Amsterdam, etc quite conveniently by train.

This is not correct. If you are redeeming AAdvantage miles, you get a free stopover only at a North American gateway. If you are redeeming BA Avios, you pay for each flight flown (although an intra-U.K. segment is no additional mileage).

If you redeem for a distance-based oneworld award (as opposed to a typical one-way or roundtrip award), then you can stop over anywhere along the itinerary.
