Question : Where to buy suits ?

Hello flyertalker,

Here is a question for you. Where do you buy your suits ? I buy mine at a standard store, downtown Montreal. I am sure i pay WAYYY too much for it. I travel the world, every few month for work but i never asked this question before. I heard of Hong Kong, India, London...I heard of buying online...Help me please Where/how do you buy your suits ? Who is your tailor ? Where is he ? Do you have a link ?

I am 35. I currently own Hugo Boss suits and one Armani.

Thank you very much and see you in a lounge !

Banana Republic and J. Crew, but I'm only in my twenties so those styles may not be appropriate or desired by you depending on your situation.

That said, I'm heading to Bangkok and Mumbai later this year so I'm definitely interested in this topic. FWIW, the India and Thailand forums both have numerous threads on tailors in those two cities and I'm sure the other regional forums have similar topics. You might want to check those out.

I buy from G&G or Royal Clothing.
But I'm sure none of you have ever heard of those brands seeing as your not hassidic Jews

Yeah, you can get some made in HKG, BKK, SGN, etc. There are even travelling tailors from HKG that visit Canada (including YUL).

As mentioned, check the sub-forums on those cities for ideas on tailors.

Depends on the level of workmanship you are looking for. For really good tailoring, go to London. HK/Singapore are the next step down (a substantial step), and Bangkok is where you usually get cheap entry-level tailoring.

That said, I've been frequenting the same two tailors in Bangkok for 20 years and am 100 percent happy with the results.

I mostly have my clothes made in NY. If you want to go to Bangkok I recently used Narin Couture on the advice of a bespoke tailoring forum and I am very pleased with the sport coats he made for me. As mentioned, based on your price point you could go anywhere, London/Naples on the high end, with HKG, Shanghai, India, Thailand all the way down to Vietnam and Cambodia on the low end. Keep in mind, the lower end the tailor, the more work you will have to do to ensure you get what you want.

I'm actually fine with Beijing, and have been buying suits there for years.... cheaper than Shanghai, let alone HK, and I've found a combination of: 1) bringing a rack suit that I like for them to copy; 2) choosing a nice fabric or supplying them with my own; 3) demanding double stitching; and 4) scheduling at least two fittings -- generally yields favorable results, even at tailors who don't have stellar reputations. I also focus on designs in which pants can be worn without jackets and not look silly. And, I get at least one extra pair of pants per jacket (same fabric, of course).

I have had suits made in Hong Kong from http://www.hongkonggrand.com/. The fitter travels the east and west coast monthly. There is a schedule on the website. So you can come to New York and get fitted. I have gone to this Bangkok tailor for years. Raja's Fashions, The big, comfortable shop on Soi 4 has plenty of material to choose from and Raja's is known for excellent fittings and finish work.

Address: 1/6 Sukhumvit Soi 4
Tel.: +66 2253 8389
Hours: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday

Both tailors do excellent work, and a quick turnaround time.

Most of my suits are actually off the rack Zegna/Boss (I admit it!) but I did buy a bespoke suit at WW Chan in HKG which I'm happy with. The quality is good and while it's not as cheap as you might think for HK, it's certainly not Savile Row prices. For shirts I like Ascot Chang (there's one in the Peninsula); they're not as cheap as they once were but they make great shirts.

Here in the good old US of A. I live in a suburb of Kansas City and there's a local guy who has the work done in Chicago. He tried farming out the work to Asia and said he couldn't get the quality he wanted.

Over the last few years I've gotten 2 suits, and 2 each of jackets, shirts and slacks, plus a skirt. (Yes, I AM female.) It's all so comfortable I can wear it on plane flights if needed, wrinkles disappear easily, and I'm one happy camper. The last jacket cost $1500 but that was from some exotic Australian wool that I think belonged to sheep that were massaged daily and conditioned with L'Oreal. Typically a suit runs about $1,500. I'd rather have one of those suits than five from Macy's.

I won't turn this into a commercial by posting a link, but if anyone wants to contact this guy please PM me.

Same thing.

WW Chan visits several US cities once or twice a year, so you can get fitted without going to HKG.

I love my Ascot Chang shirts, too. There's a store in NYC as well, on 59th.
