Nested Ticket question

I know that airlines frown upon nested ticketing so here is a question for the mor e experienced here.

The cheaper option for me is to:
1. Purchase a JFK-DEL-JFK on Delta (Leave 04/14, Return 05/26)
2. Purchase a DEL-JFK-DEL on Lufthansa (Leave 04/28, Return 05/05)

Since the tickets are on two separate airlines and will be purchased as two separate transactions, will Delta and Lufthansa catch this? If yes, what are the possible repercussions?

Two separate carriers - not a problem!

Even on the same airline, sometimes the airline either fails to catch it or doesn't make an issue of it. I have done DCA-ATL-LAX-(Nested with LAX-ATL-JFK-NRT-SIN-NRT-JFK-LAX)-ATL-DCA without nesting issue being raised. Through check-in was a problem though.

What happened at check-in, if I may ask?

According to delta, they cannot check bags for itineraries with more than 3 segments. I was asked to claim my luggage in LAX and check it back in. In LAX I talked to a supervisor. It was like having my teeth pulled. Finally, they were able to redirect my luggage to SIN without me having to claim it in LAX. It travelled without me LAX-NRT-SIN.

Ah, OK, thanks. So that wasn't specifically related to any nested ticket, at least not directly so.

Is this a Delta-specific issue? I don't remember having this problem on AA (checked in for four segments, the last three of which were on other airlines).

It appears to be Delta specific now. In the past, I have come across this with airlines when I tried checking my bags through using two separate tickets on two airlines (not nested). But they were able to work around. But Delta seems to have taken steps to make that impossible.
If you have segments on another airline, DL agents said, there won;t be a problem. It's only when you have more than three segments on DL that you face a wall.
