Q. about missing layover flights
Okay if I miss my connection between LAX and SJC will my return flight be void? Say I got off in LA and drove up to San Jose would I still be able to use the second half of the round-trip ticket? This is on Delta.

Welcome to flyertalk.
In general, if you miss part of a ticket, any remaining segments are cancelled.
If you search for hidden city ticketing here you will find hundreds of threads about it.

your route is x-lax-sjc sjc to x?
if you miss it on purpose the rest of the flights will be canceled as posted above...
if the incoming flight is late, you talk to dl about it to get you to sjc or home if you won't be able to do what you are going for...

When the incoming flight got to the connection point too late to make the next flight, have the agent reprint your entire remaining itinerary after rebooking you. If he is unable to find a suitable alternate flight, an avenue worth exploring is refunding the segment in quesiton and converting what's left to an open jaw while not collecting change fees or fare differences.
