Agreed, FIRST item up top, SECOND (if you have one) under the seat.

To play devil's advocate here, what about when your first and second item fit on top of each other? My rollaboard is legal sized, even a little under, but doesn't fit in some of ACs overheads [IIRC it fits in central overheads, but not on the side ones on a widebody) on its smallest side, only flat on its back, wheels or handles out - as opposed to longways (why they chose overheads smaller than a legal sized roll on is beyond me), thus, I put my other bag on top of it. It takes up the same amount of space as just the rollaboard, as I would not want someone else dumping their bag on top of mine (my second is light, I am conscious of fragile items etc, no liquids in the top bag so nothing that could leak)

The bag was moved promptly..

Flying with instruments is one of the more vexed topics on a music board I frequent. There are many postings on how to carry a violin unobtrusively (backpack cases are recommended). I did have a friend who flew with her fiddle in her lap on a short intra-Europe flight--"you'd cradle a baby in your arms, right? This is my 'baby'."
But I imagine that most musicians playing old Stradivarii get to fly up front, where carryon regs are often a bit more relaxed. A singer never has this problem. ;) hence I used the same name from a music forum.. works well..

That's certainly clearer when they had two. Some folks would still have more than one overhead mind you, if they had a coat and purse as well.
It sounds like you have never had someone next to you drop a drink all over your laptop bag under the seat in front! I have, which is why I no longer put my bags there. On my next trip I expect to have a family photo album with me - it will be in the cabin, and whilst it will be wrapped in a plastic bag, it will also be in the overhead just in case the guy next to me drops his red wine. Your violin, presumably insured, is expensive. The family album has no cash value, but is very valuable in other ways. Each person values things differently, doesn't make any one person more right than another. |
My worst poaching issue
This goes back quite a few years, but I was seated in FIRST and comfortable.
A PAX stops at my seat on her way to coach with a VERY large carry-on that obviously would not fit in an Overhead. She say "THIS is going RIGHT THERE!" pointing to the space under the seat in front of me. Today? I'd say, "Not while I'm seated here, it isn't!" Then? I just let her put this huge case in front of me and take all of my legroom. Yes, the sense of entitlement never ceases to amaze me. It takes real BRASS to tell someone in FIRST that you are going to put your oversize in their floorspace, on your way to coach. After that incident, nothing about poaching space surprises me. I fly coach almost exclusively now, and I can't even imagine TELLING someone in First that they were going to loose their foot/leg space to my carry-on. |

If it's in your under-seat space, it belongs to you. Next time, let her put it there and then pull it out and start leafing through it.

I was seated in the second row of F today. When I boarded, there was a laptop bag under the seat in front of me. I asked my seatmate if it was his, and he said no. He then pointed out that was a small bag in his own footspace that also was not his. So, both bulkhead passengers in front of us had put their hand luggage under their seats, even though there was plenty of room in the overhead bins.
I ended up moving the bag in my footspace to the overhead bin. I did feel a bit petty about it as I'm not that tall, had no bag to put there, and didn't really "need" the space. I guess it's possible the bulkheaders did it out of ignorance, I don't know. I wonder how FA's would resolve a dispute over such space if the overhead bins were full. |
When I'm in row 2 in F (or coach), the space under the seat in front of me is mine. Your stuff doesn't belong there.
